Sure, we could (and do) talk endlessly about the clothes we love, but for our column Line Item, we ask some of our favorite designers to tell us what they think about the best pieces from their newest collections. Today, Francesca Grosso of Sorelle tells us about her signature Septum Ring which is available for sale at Opening Ceremony.
Growing up in South Florida, my biological father was a jeweler. He sold his wares at a booth in the local mall called Francesca's Jewelers, where I used hang out after school and munch on Lunchables and sip on my capri sun. So it's kind of serendipitous that I ended up designing jewelry. I created the septum ring for the girl who has a slightly rebellious spirit. She's the girl who wants to cut her hair, get a tattoo or a piercing but isn't ready to take the plunge. I'm totally not that girl. I kind of wish I had commitment issues when it came to piercings and tattoos. Personally, I have about six piercings and eight tattoos. So, it's safe to say I'm committed.
All of the pieces I make for Sorelle are handmade and assembled in Brooklyn. I worked closely with a local caster to create this septum ring. Customers are super into it –they tell me that the piece is so effortless that they tend to forget they're wearing it. While most clip-on and temporary piercings tend to hurt, the septum ring was designed to comfortably pinch on the nose and, in a sense, feel weightless.
