Trend Report: Frumpy and Fugly at Paris Fashion Week

Frumpy was the surprising trend on the spring 2014 runways in Paris.

October 01, 2013

Fashion relies more than anything on looking new. Sometimes, after a few seasons of prettiness, the new looking good is actually looking bad. Fugly can be the easiest way to stand out from the crowd, to prove that you're different, and this week, all of the major French designers, generally known for buttoned-up Parisian beauty, sent some pretty gnarly looks down the runway. We picked a few of our frumpy favorites, about half of which recall ruffled 1980s prom dresses that are generally sources of embarrassment for the shoulder-padded women that actually wore them back in the day, and more looks seemingly inspired by couch cushions (Commes des Garçons) and oversized basketball nets (Céline). Take a look at Paris' spring 2014 in all its awkward, pink and frilly glory.
