Video: Cian Nugent & The Cosmos, “Grass Above My Head”

FADER PREMIERE

At the end of this Cait Fahey-directed video for "Grass Above My Head," we see a dog follow his master to the edge of a rock as the man dives repeatedly into the sea. That man is Dublin musician Cian Nugent, and it's the kind of meaningful little detail that feels emblematic of the song, which takes a slow, sweet foundation of Ry Cooder-style, finger-picked guitar and weaves trumpet, viola and percussion so delicately through that matrix that it takes a few seconds to even notice their presence. It's about as unhurried as Nugent seems to be as he hangs around the sea-side cliffs and beaches in the video with his dog, skipping stones, wandering up and down outdoor stairways—until it suddenly goes double time, that is, maybe just 'cause it's time to jump in. Born With The Caul, is out November 13th via No Quarter.
