"Consumerism" is so loaded, so knotted with ideologies, that even Lauryn Hill herself had to race to keep up when she performed it for the first time in New York last week. So this new lyric video, posted to her website earlier today, seems like a good place to start picking it apart. In it, her laundry list of the -isms that permeate our present day fly by in the foreground while scenes and tools of injustice play in the background. "Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them," she says, "like water seeking it's level." While you let it all sink in, read Jordan Sargent's review of Hill's passionate post-prison return show here.
