California pumps out more slapping party music.

June 10, 2014

DJ Mustard is ruling the mainstream rap realm, working with artists from YG to Justin Bieber. But he isn’t the only one in California making minimalistic slaps, as the League of Starz production crew has been pumping out a similar sound that might have even pre-dated the hot producer. One of the most recognizable members of the crew is Jay Nari, who produced Problem’s “Like Whaaat” and connects here with Los Angeles rapper Earl Swavey. “Don’t Play” is full of distorted clanks and crashes, as Swavey raps with the raw gangsterism that appeared on his underrated 2013 tape, Business Before Pleasure. Mustard might continue to pursue his pop opportunities, but Swavey and Jay Nari are holding it down right here for the more aggressive side of California rap.
