Anna Calvi and David Byrne Cover Connan Mockasin’s Creepiest Song

The British singer/songwriter shares “I’m The Man, That Will Find You” from her new collection of cover songs.

FADER PREMIERE

Next week, British singer/songwriter Anna Calvi will release a five-track EP, Strange Weather, that includes covers of songs by the likes of FKA Twigs, David Bowie, Suicide, Keren Ann and two duets with David Byrne. One of those collaborations is a cover of "I'm The Man, That Will Find You," a trippy slice of stalker-pop originally written by Connan Mockasin, the New Zealand songwriter with an impeccably eccentric fashion sense. "I love how creepy this song is," Calvi explains of hand-picking the track for her EP. "There's always something very strange and intriguing about the way [Connan Mockasin] songs are put together. I wanted to find the most basic elements of the song and highlight those." Calvi offers up a breathy take on Connan's pitch-warped original, but preserves its unsettling gooeyness; David Byrne adds in some low-key and grumbly backing vox. Strange Weather is out next week via Domino; you can listen to Calvi's Lynchian-sounding FKA Twigs cover below, too.
