Hear Ex-Abe Vigoda Trio Roses’ New Song, “The Fog”

Juan Velasquez’s new band is less noise more pop.

FADER PREMIERE

I remember being a teenager and reading online about the shows at all-ages downtown LA haven The Smell and really, really wanting to go. From my East Coast bedroom, I pictured it as some sort of utopia where outcasts and No Hope Kids listened to great, scummy noise-pop and bummed cigarettes off one another. Do those kids still exist? Or have they all grown up? Juan Velasquez's old band, Abe Vigoda, was on a lot of those bills. His new project, the LA-based trio called Roses, abandons some of that scene's signature shabbiness for clear-headed romance and a super dreamy guitar tone that, in some ways, reminds me of the underground-rock meets new-wave vibe that Merchandise has been perfecting in recent years. Roses' Dreamlover EP is out August 5th via Group Tightener. Listen to "The Fog," check out the band's tour dates, and then watch a grainy, how-did-this-even-happen FADER TV special from 2008 in which Abe Vigoda performs live in a FADER editor's Brooklyn living room.
