When British soul star Laura Mvula set out to create her debut album Sing to the Moon, she apparently imagined her voice soaring above the trumpets and cymbals of an orchestra. While that dream wasn't realized first time around, after she reached the UK chart's Top 10 and took awards season by storm in 2013, a live performance with the Dutch Metropole Orchestra led to a re-recording of her album backed by the cinematic instrumentals her vocals demand. It’s slated for release on August 11, but we’re debuting the album's second track “Make Me Lovely,” which twinkles with the xylophones and flutes evocative of Disney’s classic scores. Mvula’s soulful voice sparks comparisons to contemporary R&B chanteuses, but her overall impression is as rich and timeless as the likes of Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday. Stream the track now, plus watch her interview at The FADER Fort below and check our 2013 GEN F on Mvula here.
