For those feeling a little lovelorn as of late and in need of that perfect song to get them through the day, may we suggest Jessie Ware’s new single “Say You Love Me,” from her upcoming new record Tough Love. The soulful slow jam, which just premiered on BBC Radio 1, features BenZel’s production and captures a relationship in a holding pattern. In one lyric Ware sings to her lover: Baby it looks as though we’re running out of words to say/ and love is floating away, but at the same time she’s holding out for hope (Won’t you stay?). Combining electronic elements and traditional soul with Ware’s tender yet emotive vocals , “Say You Love Me” is a precursor of what to expect on Tough Love, which is scheduled to drop on October 6th—the same month the singer is scheduled to play live dates in her native UK. Last November, Ware spoke to The FADER in Brooklyn and previewed what Tough Love is going to sound like: “I’m really proud of [previous album] Devotion...I think it was a really great way of easing me into doing music and understanding how to write. This time I want to feel like I’m more confident. And that doesn’t mean bigger songs – it just means more settled. I still want to have electronic live elements. I think what’s going to maybe be different is how I use my voice."
