FKA Twigs Tiptoes Round Taboos On “Video Girl”
Is that guy in the video being executed or sedated?
The layers at work in an FKA Twigs video get deeper and deeper. It's hard to tell whether the man in the prison overalls above—who, judging by the fan art on the wall behind him, seems to have a Twigs obsession—is being executed or sedated while Twigs watches on through one-way glass in this video for LP1 track "Video Girl." Well, one version of Twigs, tearstained with hair loose about her shoulders, watches on. Another Twigs with Hannibal-like facial jewelry dances a predatory dance in a corridor, and a third in a bandage-like dress—definitely the polished performer of the three—stalks about the sedated prisoner strapped to a hospital bed, at one point straddling him to reach for a microphone suspended from the ceiling. I can't recognize me, Twigs sings as the music fades. It's kind of shocking, and as ever scratches at more questions than it answers.
