Henry Jackson, a member of trailblazing hip-hop group Sugar Hill Gang also known as "Big Bank Hank," passed away from Cancer-related complications early Tuesday, CNN reports. He was 57. His group's era-defining dance club hit "Rapper's Delight," released in 1979, was the first rap single to crack Billboard's Top 40 charts. 35 years on, the track still makes us want to shimmy.
The surviving two members of Sugar Hill Gang, "Wonder Mike" Wright and Guy "Master Gee" O'Brien, have issued a statement about the death of their bandmate: "So sad to hear about our brother's passing. The 3 of us created musical history together with the release of "Rapper's Delight." We will always remember traveling the world together and rocking the house. Rest in peace Big Bank."
