Fetty Wap Speaks On Drake Co-Sign: “I’m Just A Nobody Compared To Drake, And He Still Asked Me”

You can thank Instagram DM for the “My Way” remix.

The turnaround was quick—on Monday morning footage of Drake sitting in front of a mic while Fetty Wap's "My Way" played in the background surfaced on Instagram; by Tuesday night a finished version of the remix had been uploaded to Soundcloud. In the hours between, Fetty stopped by The FADER's New York office, and walked us through how the major co-sign came to be.

Drake reached out through Instagram, Fetty said. "He sent me a DM, and I sent him my number. When I landed from Tampa a couple of days ago, and as soon as I landed and turned my phone off of airplane mode, he was FaceTiming from DC where he was playing 'My Way' at a club. He was like, 'Yo, I want to cut the record tonight.' Next thing I know, I checked my email and it was there."

On Tuesday, Fetty released several official remixes of his still-climbing single, "Trap Queen." Explaining why he'd waited so long to add verses to the song, he said: "I don't really reach out to nobody. I like to be my own person, I don't like to look for handouts."

But the decision to add Drake to "My Way," was an easy one, Fetty said. "The thing I respect about Drake the most is that he's not one of them artists that take his status and just do what he want with it. He has the status to just do anybody's track, if he really wants to. I'm just a nobody compared to Drake, and he still actually asked me, 'Is it cool if I do a remix?' And even the way he said it—more like, 'Can I bless it?' He was thanking me for putting him on the remix, and I'm trying to tell him like, 'No, thank you. You don't understand what you're doing for me.' He's definitely a very, very, very, very humble person."

Fetty has yet to meet Drake in person, but hopes "that when we do meet it's going to be a lot more music in the making." For all his respect for Drake, though, Fetty's still claiming 2015 as his own. "I ain't really gonna spill the beans too much," he said, "but just know—'Trap Queen,' 'My Way'? Fetty Wap is the artist of the year."
