Toronto Singer Faiza Sparkles On Irish Producer Graeme S’ “Magick”

Where footwork and jungle flirt with R&B.

September 02, 2015

Irish producer Graeme S, who runs the footwork-leaning imprint Hsüan Records, didn't want to play it safe on his new Jade Temple EP. For the dizzyingly sweet lead single "Magick," premiering below, he sought out the talents of Faiza, an R&B singer based all the way out in Toronto: it's a weird combination, and yet it's totally transfixing when Faiza drizzles the words come away with me over Graeme's jagged jungle production like honey. Graeme S explained to The FADER over email that the track was an "exploration using the footwork/jungle genre as a template and challenging myself to create something that I felt was unique," pushing Faiza's vocal into "more abstract, darker waters."

"'Magick' is about allure and seduction," Faiza added, also speaking over email. "But it also has to do with creating your own reality. I'm telling my lover that if he trusts and surrenders to me, we can make a beautiful life together. One where we fall in love everyday and defy societal standards of what a romantic relationship should look like. I'm asking him to live and love the way he wants to: fearlessly. I'm asking him to be open to the possibility of being happy every day, of falling in love every day, with everything."
