On "Take You There," the longest song on Weyes Blood's new four-track EP, project mastermind Natalie Mering sings in her usual devastating, tremulous warble: Losing touch with time/ you take me there/ I'm so scared. Listening, I'm not totally sure if the lyrics are referring to a kind of overwhelming romance or the actual process of crossing over to a higher plane of consciousness. The production makes things even less clear-cut, with an organ-like synth lull and spooky harmonies. It's a gorgeous, drawn-out example of the thing that makes this release, and Weyes Blood songs in general, so consistently spellbinding: Mering's dedication to designing folk songs to be soul-baring, but also full of mystery. Cardamom Times, streaming below in full, is officially out this Friday via Mexican Summer.
