SOFI TUKKER Borrow From Brazil For “Matadora”

Hear the second single off the N.Y. folk-dance duo’s upcoming EP, Soft Animals.

January 07, 2016

The New York-based folk-dance duo SOFI TUKKER—comprised of Tucker Halpern and Sophie Hawley-Weld—have experienced a groundswell of notoriety since the release of their infectious first single "Drinkee" (which may be familiar from its placement in an Apple watch ad). They are now working towards the release of their debut EP Soft Animals with the release of a second single, titled "Matadora."

Like its predecessor, "Matadora" is SOFI TUKKER's sonic interpretation of a poem by the Brazilian poet Chacal. It features a backbone drumbeat that hits like a heard of hooves and the melodramatic wail of an Andean string instrument called the charango. "While we were making it, we envisioned a female matador in an ornate red and gold costume teasing a dangerous bull," the duo wrote in an email to The FADER. "We love performing this song because we get to jump around and hit things."
