The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and three huge popstars are competing in the Best Original Song category: Sam Smith (with "Writings On The Wall" for Spectre), The Weeknd (with "Earned It" for 50 Shades Of Grey), and Lady Gaga (with "Til It Happens To You" from The Hunting Ground).

The underdog entries are J. Ralph and Antony's "Manta Ray," which appeared in Racing Extinction, and "Simple Song 3," written by David Lang for Youth. Best Original Score nominees includes Thomas Newman, Carter Burwell, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and a pair of legends: John Williams and Ennio Morricone.

Smith and his writing partner, Jimmy Napes, recently pulled down a Golden Globe for their James Bond theme. See the full list of nominations here.
