At least since the ‘70s, the musical relationship between Detroit and Berlin has been friendly. First-wave Detroit techno producers were exposed to Kraftwerk on the radio by the radio sets of a famous local DJ, the Electrifying Mojo. And long before Detroit techno was acknowledged in America as a groundbreaking musical form, it had acolytes in Germany.

Berlin-based photographer Marie Staggat’s new book represents another step in the evolution of the relationship between these two cities. Staggat travelled to Detroit “to shoot close-up pictures of each featured DJ, musician and producer, as their hands and ears represent the fundamental ‘tools’ for all their creative output.” 313ONELOVE also contains anecdotes from many of the artists that she photographed—a group that includes Amp Fiddler, Carl Craig, Chez Damier, Dez Andres, Juan Atkins, Kenny Larkin, Kevin Saunderson, Mad Mike Banks, Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.), Marcellus Pittman, Anthony Shake Shakir and Robert Hood, among others.
