There are seemingly as many ways to describe the act of making fun of someone as there are to actually make fun of them: you can, for instance, roast someone. You can clown them, diss them, rip them, read them. It feels endless. When Atlanta upstart Lil Yachty, also known endearingly as Lil Boat, visited New York earlier this winter, he taught us a word he described as being very Southern: "joan." The definition is simply to make fun of someone, he explained, before using it in a couple of sentences, just to clarify the context. "You got a bad haircut, we joanin' your ass. That hairline? You getting joaned. You know you getting joaned if your hairline is not symmetrical." Consider that a Yachty warning.
