"Art and music are about creative expression," Viet Cong wrote on Facebook last fall. "However, our band name is not our cause, and we are not going to fight for it. This is not what our band is about."
"We rushed into our last band name decision," the group continued. "We don’t plan to rush into this one, but know that will be rolling out a new name as soon as we agree upon one."
Pitchfork reports that the group has now decided upon its new moniker: Preoccupations. "After finishing our latest record and taking some time off, we are excited to announce that we will be performing and recording as 'Preoccupations' going forward," the band explained in a statement. "We apologize to those who were adversely affected by our former band name. This was never anticipated nor our intent. We are artists and not politicians, we understand that the name reflected pain to some individuals and we are happy to change it and move on and focus on our music."
