Watch the first trailer for season 3 of True Detective

True Detective will return in 2019 with a new story and a new lead in Mahershala Ali. The Oscar-winning Moonlight actor appears in the first trailer for the third season, which HBO debuted on Sunday night. Check it out above.

Little of the plot is given away in the trailer, though Ali is shown playing three distinct phases in his character's life. The show also stars Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff, and Carmen Ejogo with Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier helming the opening pair of episodes.

Season 3 of True Detective will premiere in January 2019 on HBO.
