The late poet and songwriter David Berman—best known for his work with Silver Jews, and more recently with Purple Mountains—was honored by the Tennessee Titans with a tribute message on their scoreboard during a Sunday game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Pitchfork reports. The scoreboard read: “Nashville (and the world) will always love David Berman.” Berman, who passed away earlier this year, was a big football fan who regularly incorporated the sport into his writing. He also moved to Nashville the same year as the Titans’ arrival, as Pitchfork notes, and Berman became a devoted supporter. “Perhaps it took the marriage of Now and Then, here in the weeks leading up to football season, to make us realize that in death we are declassified,” he wrote in his poem Tableau Through Shattered Monocle, “these words are meant to mark this day on earth.”
