Mychelle moves past the hurt on unguarded new song “Closure”

Get up close and personal with the London-based songwriter ahead of the release of her debut EP.

Hackney-born Mychelle has a voice that makes everything else aroud her sound coincidental. Deep and rich, her vocals on new song "Closure" wrap around linees like "I just want you close to me" and "My heart had gone cold now it's warming up" with equal measures of pain and strength as she looks back over the end of a relationship.

The song's video, premiering above, is suitably exposed, too. Mychelle, accompanied by little more than her acoustic guitar and a house plant, steps into the spotlight and opens her heart up. Watching it feels more like spying on a confessional than a live performance.

Speaking to The FADER, Mychelle said: “I wrote ‘Closure’ at home last June, during lockdown. I was at home, in my own space, able to be completely vulnerable. I started off with the line ‘Why do I get closer when I need some closure?’ but I wasn’t sure about it. I thought maybe it’s a bit cheesy so I sent it to a friend to see what they thought. When I was voice-noting the song I got really shy and ended up holding on to the record button, debating whether I should send it. My friend told me to include the voice note in the song and that’s what you hear at the end. Writing the song it actually made me realise how complicated seeking closure actually is.”

Both "Closure" and Mychelle's debut singe "The Way" will appear on her forthcoming debut EP, also titled Closure, set for release on May 7 via FAMM (Jorja Smith, ENNY).
