When the star-studded Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack dropped alongside the movie last month there was one name on the tracklist that was a little bit more of a mystery than Rihanna, Burna Boy, Tems et al. Appearing alongside Rema on the funky and dark "Wake Up" was Nigerian artist Bloody Civilian. She followed that big time debut with her own solo single "How To Kill A Man," a video for which is premiering on The FADER today.
"How To Kill A Man" is a tongue in cheek exercise in venting rage without technically harming anyone, man or otherwise. "I got many problems," Bloody sings as she cites her siblings as knowing all about her woes. Turning her attention to the root of those problems she threatens to bury them "six feet under" before repeating the line "Go down, down go down, down." It's dramatic and confessional, with the rich and seductive beat pulling you in closer as the threats intensify.
Speaking to The FADER via email, Bloody Civilian says the video was her chance "to show power — to show women’s power. In the visuals you see women of all ages and walks of life, coming together in times of adversity.
"There’s a lot you can do with a group of people and with the help of your community, but in the end there are some journeys you have to walk alone. And that’s how this video ends, with the character alone.”
