Food Thyme: Inside The Cardinal Club

For a “clandestine dining club,” the Cardinal Club isn’t much of a secret these days (you can read all about it here, here, and here). However, getting a reservation to this secret garden is a whole different story. Back in August, when we found a way to get an advanced peak into the club, the next available reservation was sometime in November, so this seems like the appropriate time to post it. Cardinal Club owner and chef, Simon, was kind enough to let us watch the preparation of one new corn crepe dish from beginning to end, which meant we woke up extra early to follow him around the Union Square farmer’s market to witness his seasonal menu come to life. We highly recommend making a reservation for a special occasion.

Stream: Copy, “Karate Eyes”

The last we remember of DJ Copy, FADER associate editor Sam Hockley Smith was talking about his Diva Mixtape, Vol.1 and mumbling something about BONE THUGS. Thankfully, Copy has resurfaced with a new track on an EP inspired entirely by Jesse Reiser’s novel Atlas of Novel Tectonics. Now we can enjoy electro-bleep accompaniment to our thoughts on “The Judo of Cold Combustion.” Stream the track on Gold Robot Records’ MySpace or pony up for some limited edition colored vinyl.

Food Thyme: Wild Yaks Graze Slices on Scott’s Pizza Tour

We already knew that the grizzled men from Wild Yaks had a fondness for pizza and beer, but when we found out frontman Rob Bryn had pie in his blood (his brother owns Robertas in Bushwick), we decided to invite the entire band out on the ultimate pizza journey—Scott’s Pizza Walking Tour. Suspicious at the first glance of our pizza survival kits, our guide Scott Weiner shepherded us with his pizza facts, diagrams and charts, and ultimately won us over with some bad jokes. As a dude who has traveled the world sampling every species of pizza, eats nearly 32 slices a week, has attempted to climb into a coal burning oven to experience the life of a pizza, and can recite pizza facts like no other, he is #1 in the pizza hall of knowledge. Thanks to Scott, we found the answers to some very important questions, like where to find lard pizza (Keste), why the pepperonis at Lombardi’s are so delicious (natural meat casings!), and how to tell what kind of oven your pizza has been in (look at the bottom of the slice, duh). Many thanks to Lombardi’s, Alleva, Pizza Box, John’s and the old guy who’s been making pizza ovens by hand for the past 45 years (your hair looks great, btw).

Itemized: Vestal Datamat Calculator Watch

Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Rosemary Simon writes about the Vestal Datamat calculator watch.

NYC Film: Nina Simone – Great Performances

Andy Stroud’s rare-footage documentary, Nina Simone Great Performances: College Concerts and Interviews, opens at The Maysles Institute in New York City tonight. Stroud was Simone’s husband and manager and when we chose to feature her as one of our Icons in FADER 38, he provided great insight into her unique character and misunderstood personality. We also spoke with Stroud and Simone’s daughter—both interviews are republished here in full, heartbreaking glory. If legendary concert footage and timeworn interviews with the high priestess of soul are not enough to get you to travel up above 125th St. tonight, Maysles is also showing the first-ever documentary made about Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music, from 1969. Split your brain like a dolphin and watch both documentaries at once.

Video: The Jesus Lizard Brightens Up Pitchfork Music Festival

We made it to Union Park in Chicago this past weekend just in time to catch a sideshow of indie rock babies, an unwelcome whiff of global warming, and of course, the 4th annual Pitchfork Music Festival. We spent most of the cloudy, spring-like weekend watching known FADER favorites The Very Best, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Wavves, Lindstrom, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart etc, but the real highlight of the entire thing was The Jesus Lizard.

We’re not usually big on reunion shows or scrotal showcases, but David Yow brought back his intense, zig-zaggy stage swagger minus the “Tight and Shiny”— doing push-ups on stage, giving the audience hula lessons, spitting everywhere and diving into the audience within the first three seconds of the show—with grand mastery. We caught a little bit of it on our Flipcam—watch closely for some ancient hula styles and Yow’s tiniest fan taking stage diving notes from the sidelines.
