Don’t Give Up On Wilco Yet

June 26, 2007

Lately folks have been griping that Wilco's sound has taken a sharp turn towards Dullsville, their latest long-player Sky Blue Sky more an exercise in comfy, recliner-rock than cause for head-bang. We took in an evening with the Second City's finest last night at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York and while new material was the aural equivalent of warm milk (not always a bad thing!), Tweedy & Co. still know how to get in their share of shots to the gut and ribs in a live setting. Dudes ripped through a two-hour set heavy on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot including pristine versions of "Jesus, etc," "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" and "Heavy Metal Drummer." There were even a few jams off of Summerteeth! It should also be noted time and again: despite his truly upsetting taste in shirts, lead axeman Nels Cline has a jackhammer of a right arm that gave each and every cut a nice set of fangs, solo after hair-raising solo. Guy makes it tough to be bored. So even if you don't dig on their new tunes, do everything in your power to see them blow shit it up onstage (figuratively, of course). They're playing another sold-out show tonight at Warsaw in Brooklyn and unless you can find a current ticket-holder in dire need of a kidney or liver, you may be out of luck. Just a suggestion.
