Live: Diesel U:Music Miami (Santigold Lives!)

It’s been about two years since we put Santigold on the cover of F51, but since she played Studio B for the issue’s release party she’s been harder to find than someone willing to love us for us, and not just because we can score them tickets to Wild Yaks shows. Sure, Santi put on for her city on Jiggaman’s “Brooklyn (We Go Hard)” and even beefed up Major Lazer’s “Hold The Line” but then the videos for both were just balmy cartoons. This past Tuesday, however, we witnessed Santi in all her leopard print/white short set glory, along with Kid Cudi, Jemina Pearl, DJ Mom Jeans and a brain-scrambling noise dance troupe called the Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! at Diesel’s U:Music Miami stop. Though both Cudi and Jemina have promising debut albums to their credit, it was Santi (and a pair of lithe dancers) who reminded us how wrong we’ve been to have neglected Santogold in recent months. We also found out that she’s been training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with Lupe Fiasco and a bunch of other people for charity, and by the time the people were rushing the stage to wild out to Momjeans closing out on the wheels, we were swooning again just like the first time we heard “Creator.”

Shred For Your Life!

Last Tuesday, Santos Party House was home to the ultimate in guitar-nerd heaven, the fifth Annual Shred For Your Life Guitar Battle. Contestants from all walks of life lined up backstage preparing to rip each other apart in an event that had the feeling of an older, more “authentic” New York. Not since the early days of Punk Rock Heavy Metal Karaoke at the Continental has Downtown seen a competition that conjured up this kind of head-banging enthusiasm in a crowd.

NYC: Dam-Funk Comes to the FADER Bowl

Tomorrow, Tuesday October 27th, our cover star, West Coast boogie maven, Dam-Funk comes east to celebrate the release of his impossibly funky new album Toeachizown. We’ve invited him—along with like minded bumpers Snack n Cmish, Duane Harriot and Master Khan and Cubic Zirconia—to inaugurate the first FADER new monthly party at the extraordinary new, massive Brooklyn Bowl. This is both stellar venue perfect for a lot of furious jamming and a real live bowling alley, so make sure to bring both your dancing and your bowling shoes. We’ll be doing both at the same time. While playing air keytar. Come through! No RSVP necessary, just a positive mental attitude (Dam-Funk made us say that).

Live: FADER 64 Issue Release Party

Last week, we decided to have an issue release party smack dab in the middle of CMJ insanity, adding to the whirlwind our beleaguered iCals promised. It felt like the right thing to do, as friends from far and wide across the boroughs and beyond came through to celebrate the birth of our Bon Iver/Dam-Funk issue with a little Budweiser and Budweiser American Ale. Everyone was treated to the excellent selections of the Cool Places Soundsystem, whose laissez-faire DJing made no bones about playing soca, bhangra and folk jams in quick succession. As they dropped Aly-Us’ “Follow Me” to our pleasure, Los Angeles dreamers/F64 Gen F stars Warpaint set up their equipment, and then proceeded to completely shred through jams like “Elephants” and “Beetles.” The crowd watched rapt, entranced by their lovely whorls. The party ended early, and everyone scattered into the night, off to see 452 more bands in three hours. See more pics from the scene after the jump.

The Grateful Dead Take Over New York Forever

March 2010 is basically forever from now, but we’re already excited for the New York Historical Society’s exhaustive history of the Grateful Dead told through a grip of archival materials. There is no way this won’t be better than listening to our dads talk about how amazing Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment was at Avalon in ‘69, which was cool the first hundred times but then got old. Because that shit is so far away, and because we’re children of the internet, we naturally need something to hold us over. Luckily New York has us covered with a swanky fundraising exhibition on Wednesday night (for the ballers), as well as the brilliant idea to tie-dye the Empire State Building tonight in celebration of the band. We’ve also got you covered. Remember when we did this?

Gucci Mane Empties His Hard Drive On To The Internet

There’s a popular saying in sports that claims, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” The part you never hear, however, is that when talent does work hard, everybody’s fucked. This past Saturday, October 17th (10/17), at 10:17pm, in a move of unprecedented internet generosity, 1017 Brick Squad’s Gucci Mane attempted to explain his now months-long hiatus with three whole mixtapes of original music. To think that all this time he was just locked in the studio amassing enough material for three street albums. If you’re like us and just getting around to downloading these after a long weekend of not being on the computer, then you’ve got your work cut out for you. But if you were actually dialed in Saturday night, by now you surely have some idea of which one is paramount and should feel free to leave the answer in the comments.

Vashti Bunyan: From Here to Before

How weird has Vashti Bunyan’s life been? She made an album, was more or less forgotten forever and then dudes that have been on our covers like Animal Collective and Devendra Banhart reintroduced the world to her music and reminded us that it was not necessarily terrible to listen to music that sounded like smiling unicorns. In what seems like such a good move we’re surprised no one did it sooner, Vashti Bunyan: From Here to Before documents not only both sections of Bunyan’s career, but also her trip to retrace her steps as she travels from London to Scotland by horse and carriage. That alone is interesting enough for an entire movie, but the film also features cameos from like everyone who ever liked her music as well as existing as a career retrospective for one of the more interesting and confounding musical figures around. Vashti Bunyan: From Here to Before is playing tomorrow and Saturday at 7:30 at 92Y Tribeca.
