The Uniform Project Trailer

The Uniform Project Trailer from The Uniform Project on Vimeo.
Sheena Mathieken is just over halfway through The Uniform Project, a 365-day sartorial challenge that involves wearing and endlessly re-styling the same little black dress. We actually bumped into Mathieken a couple of weeks ago and can attest that she’s still going strong, working her accessories (although the summer, she admits, was a little rough) and raising plenty of money for charity while she’s at it. She recently posted a short film about the project on her website, and there’s even a special Uniform Project accessories soireé coming up later this week to celebrate the six month mark. Details after the jump.
James Brown vs Ali in No Mas’ Rumblevision
- story Chioma Nnadi
It’s been 35 years since George Foreman and Muhammad Ali met on Zairian soil for their “Rumble in the Jungle”—or as some would have it—the Fight of the Century. NYC-based clothiers No Mas are celebrating the anniversary of Ali’s victory with Rumblevision, a series of animated shorts in which artists like David Rathman pick and mix pivotal rumble moments (the rope-a-dope, the press conference, the epic TOK) in bluesy watercolor. Illustrator James Blagden on the other hand, goes off on a pretty amazing and fantastical tangent for his short, staging an entirely re-imagined rumble where James Brown goes toe to toe with Ali in a puff-sleeved, flared-leg onesie. It’s really more of a soul-powered dance-off than a real fight, and kind of like what Celebrity Death Match, might look like if you crossed it with America’s Best Dance Crew.

Slideshow: Henrik Vibskov
- story Chioma Nnadi
For his FADER feature story Henrik Vibskov, gave us full access to his loopy and amazing kingdom. Photographer Guy Martin captured The Solar Donkey Experiment, his spring 2010 runway show in Paris, while Thomas Lekfeldt trailed the Danish designer at the Roskilde music festival in Denmark. Vibskov was the creative director of the dragon formation for Trentemøller’s performance, and you can spot him in his uniform—harem shorts, camo jacket, striped socks and beat-up lil hat—shifting in-between the dancers, on his way to the drum kit.
Jeremy Scott’s Cartoon Savannah
Jeremy Scott’s first collection for Adidas, released earlier this year, was a glittery-gold selection of irresistibly cut (wearable) harem pants, sequins, sporty fringed tanks and coveted winged hightops. His next installment abandons his black-gold-and-silver, Studio 54 color palette for a hue explosion and elongation of the tribal streetwear trend pioneered by MIA and Cassette Playa. Leopard-spotted sweatshirts, global mapped bodycon dresses and “tribal mask”-printed, exposed-pocket track suits all make appearances in this eminently watchable video collaboration with the video director Nabil. Appropriately, The Very Best, Esau Mwamwaya, MIA and Santigold soundtrack the trampoliney splashing around his collection apparently demands.

Betsey Johnson Runway Video Archive
- story Chioma Nnadi
It’s taken us a few days to digest the archive of awesome that Betsey Johnson recently posted on her website. And honestly between the 10 amazing fashion shows—starting with the fall of 1979 and stretching right up through to the early ’90s—it’s almost impossible to pick favorites. Do we go with the Lion-King-meets-Lawrence-of-Arabia vibes Johnson channels for spring ‘84? Or ride for her fall ‘82 bleach-blonde fembots? In any case the videos are the best kind of sartorial teaser we can think of for the new Betsey Johnson X Opening Ceremony collection, due to hit the store any day now and featured in our current Drake/Girls Fall Fashion issue on newsstands now.
Video: Adam Kimmel’s Continental Cowboys
- story Peter Macia
Last year around this time we posted a video of two psychopaths barreling down a steep hillside highway on skateboards wearing powder blue Adam Kimmel suits. It was probably the best fashion promo we’d seen outside of like Victoria’s Secret and Ghostface’s video about Wallabees. Kimmel’s latest video, of Mexican bullrider Rocky McDonald going the distance in a chic black tux, kind of makes the fact that we don’t ride bikes to the office because we don’t want piss puddle to spray up our t-shirts sound like baby talk. Regardless, the cowboy theme of the video and Kimmel’s spring 2010 line was partially inspired by Jim Krantz’s iconic Marlboro Man photography of the last few decades and probably had a little to do with Richard Prince’s pieces based on the same since Kimmel is well-known for his dalliances with modern art, so Kimmel hired Krantz to shoot it. View the line at Men’s Style and see what you can get right now right here.
Video: Let Them Eat Cake Fashion Shorts
- story Chioma Nnadi
The philosophy behind British fashion magazine Let Them Eat Cake evokes the spirit of French revolt badassness: What would happen if all the fashion interns and photo assistants abandoned their stations and started a new fashion universe of their very own? LTEC has been a showcase for up-and-comers for over three years now, and the latest issue even comes with its own collection of fashion short films. Be prepared for lots of models eating KFC in lacy draws, writhing around in hotel bedrooms with fully functioning horse sandals on their back (there is even a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it snapshot of tigers shagging). “All the Young Dudes,” a moody fashion story shot on the beach with a cast of androgynous models in slouchy, dishevelled gorgeousness, is definitely a pleasantly earth-bound place to look for inspiration this fall.
Slideshow: Summer in the City- Part Two
- story THE FADER
For part two of the Summer in the City series we sent photographer Gabriele Stabile on an excursion to Central Park. While Ziggy Marley played his set at Summerstage last month, Stabile rounded up the night’s most stylee moments.

A-Ron and the Off Bowery x Altamont Videos
- story Chioma Nnadi
The press preview for Off Bowery x Altamont was back in the spring, so we’ve had a few months to mull over the much anticipated A-Ron-curated collection. Two videos featuring the don appeared on the Altamont website yesterday, but it’s the second clip that sheds some light on his inspiration for the collaboration, including the post-apocalyptic, post-nuclear Mad Max vibes that are all over it. A-Ron lists a bunch of co-creatives on the projects but it’s unclear between Weirdo Dave of Fuck This life and Seaman Sperms which of these artists actually factually exists and which ones are crazy Hell’s Angel types living in backyard of A-Ron’s mind. A-Ron had wanted to include a spike helmet in collection but the production logistics were—much to our chagrin—far too bonkers to get around. His Gang Bang leather vest is probably closer to the look we’re going for right now anyway.
Style: Charles Guislain is the Future of Men’s Fashion
- story THE FADER
Fashion blogger Diane Pernet has a knack for spotting talent super early, so we’re hedging our bets on her newest Margiela-wrapped protegé, Charles Guislain, being the future of avant-garde men’s fashion. The adorable little French fashionisto has been swanning his way through men’s fashion week in Paris, hustling shows on the strength of some baby-faced je-ne-sais-quoi charm, a bleach-blonde do and a mean pair of Rick Owens wedged booties. If he doesn’t end up being the next Hedi Slimane he will probably end up dating him.
