Issue 28

Our main music feature is a suite of seven pieces with the specific focus of talking to artists about their art and their craft–the hows and whys of what they do. To the mainstream world, it might seem like the people in our Magnificent Seven have nothing to do with each other, but you know The FADER–you know us!–so you trust there's some sort of thread connecting Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta and the rapper David Banner to Eleanor Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces and Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age (and Joanna Newsom and Hisham Bharoocha and Antony, um, Johnson). And then we did some fashion things, because it's spring and well, this is our Spring Style Spectacular. In all likelihood you'll lose yourself in these pages for a while.
KNOX ROBINSON
Cover 1: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
Leader Of The Free World
"I feel like I'm tapping into something that has already been written–it exists already and has its own life and I feel like I'm just recognizing it, like the way we recognize things in dreams."
Cover 2: David Banner
Many Rivers To Cross
"For me to have that much effect over people just because of what I put in a song, it makes it hard for me to write right now...I make this music because I have a chance to touch the world."
Cover 3: Josh Homme
Out Of Control
"You either got girls or you didn't. No one had money...Fame? Where? In the desert? It had to be for the music."
Cover 4: Eleanor Friedberger
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
"There's this famous story of Matt stabbing me with a Swiss Army knife...It was kind of an accident, but it kind of wasn't."
Feature 1: Joanna Newsom
Magive Everyday
"It makes as much sense to confer magic on an iPod as anything else. An iPod is magic! If I could figure out how to use it, I would probably have one!"
Feature 2: Antony
A Reading From The Book Of...
"I feel a little battle scarred. Maybe the last of an old frontier. Like, Oh, the new babies are just different."
Feature 3: Hisham Baroocha
Hisham The King
"If I'm not really peaceful, I can't play this music...If part of my mind has fear about not being able to do it then I won't be able to–it'll totally fall apart."
