A couple weeks ago in his Ghetto Palms column Eddie Stats put together a blend of dudes going in on Dre Skull’s Skull Riddim. He mentioned, but didn’t include 77 Klash’s version, which is easily the most sensitive iteration and features Klash getting really emo and pining for a girl who won’t ring his number.

Hey look, 77 Klash made a video for his totally awesome “Mad Again” that does not fit with the subject matter at all! “Mad Again” is one of the more tense songs on the Code for the Streets EP (there’s even the sound of a kettle about to boil over), but the video reminds us of a Gap ad, except instead of swingdancing, it stars the dude who produced Turbulence’s “Notorious” wearing Rockers gear.

Hey have you heard about this thing they do in Austin every year? There’s two major reasons to go: 1) So you can capture universes-collide moments between cats who would never cross paths in any other setting, like South Africa’s BLK JKS and N.E.R.D.‘s Pharrell, par example. 2) So you can run into dudes who live like three feet from you but you never see them in Brooklyn, and find out what’s going on with them. In the second category weighing in at three billion pounds is our mans Gize who has been doing his bloodcleet thing lately as the head and main creative force behind Brooklyn-based Klash City recordsWe listed KC in the “ones to watch” category a few issues back (F51) mostly on the strength of superlative Gize riddims like the “Swarm” and the “Scallawah”–which you may know better as the backbone of Turbulence’s classic “Notorious”. But turns out he is just as likely to be attacking the microphone himself these days under the name 77Klash–and sometimes even passing it to foundation dancehall legend Johnny Osbourne, who is his uncle or maybe cousin once removed. You can listen to the results below on two 77Klash tunes that are getting a big run on New York sounds at the moment.
