Ghetto Palms 78: Creator Riddim / New Spragga Benz / Polyriddimatical Madness
- story Eddie "Stats" Houghton
- photo Andrew Dosunmu (F34)
Last Ghetto Palms I shouted at the devil of prefab dancehall, and this week the universe did shout me back in the form of veteran sessions player and producer Colin “Bulby” York, who released the polyrhythmic spree called the Creator riddim on his Fat Eyes label. Irrational rhythms may be replacing auto-tune as the new trend in JA, at least judging from the Weapon riddim and the new Spragga joint included below, which flips the clicky polyriddim of “Sweet Georgia Brown” (Cf. Brother Bones, Harlem Globetrotters, R. Kelly). This last should not be too surprising, since it’s produced by Salaam Remi whose previous collabos with Spragga include the Acid Hall riddim, a pre-millenium high point in dancehall creativity.

Dintun, “Ena” MP3
At first this Dintun track sounds like someone tossing a bunch of rubber balls around a tiny square room, with lots of cool sounds but no discernable rhythm or direction. But then, as if by magic, everything starts to quantize itself, and the helium-filled beats and synths fall together into a stuttering, future-minimal 4/4 pattern, catching the high-hat in the ass on the downstroke. The Argentina-based producer has a few gigs lined up this weekend, if you happen to be in Buenos Aires or San Carlos de Bariloche, but if you don’t you can sit around and wait for his Elwood EP to drop.
Annnd as a bonus, also download a gulpy dance track by young Nuevo Leon-based producer/DJ Spin Laden (or “Mexdubs” due to his physical and sartorial similarity to FADER familia Nicholas P. Catchdubs).

Freeload: Wale + 9th Wonder Back to the Feature Mixtape (Mixed by Nick Catchdubs)
- story THE FADER
At the beginning of this primarily 9th Wonder-produced mixtape, Wale says, “People be like, ‘Can you put the fucking tape out, Wale? You’re lazy…’” We’re definitely not calling Wale lazy, but dude needs to get an album out as soon as he can. Until then, we can make do with this mixtape, which is awesome enough to carry us for a couple months. We’ve had not-so-nice words for 9th Wonder’s production before (”His snares sound like someone slapping a wet cardboard box” etc), but Wale and his guests, who range from Beanie Sigel to Freeway to Daniel Merriweather to an excellent verse-for-verse tradeoff song with Bun B, make us forget all about the past. And of course the guiding hand of FADER-fam and awesome dude Nick Catchdubs, who has mixed all of Wale’s tapes to date, deserves some credit, too.

Freeload: Mishka Presents Nick Catchdubs & Mr. Ducker, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter ‘09
- story THE FADER
When FADER-fam Nick Catchdubs and Mr. Ducker released the first installment of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter in conjunction with Mishka we spent like three months with it on repeat looking at our middle school yearbooks and thinking about Matthew Lillard. So far, the sequel is taking us on all the same memory quests, while also reminding us of that weird time when everyone talked about how high-pitched the dude from Wheatus’ voice was. Honestly, we could go off about every single song on this mix, but Mr. Ducker has a much better rundown after the jump, along with the tracklist.

Freeload: Flashing Lights Mix v. 3
- story THE FADER
We cannot recall how many times the members of the Flashing Lights triumvirate—Nick Catchdubs, Jubilee and DJ Ayres—have individually housed us with impeccably selected dance jams* until we are facedown on the dancefloor then someone puts our hand in water so we pee. TOO MANY TIMES, LET’S DO IT AGAIN. This Friday, their Brooklyn monthly hosts DJ Lindsey (so many FADER alumni!) plus the live, real-life United States debut of Kitsuné wunderkind LaRoux! To prep you for the dance-off and assist you in physical endurance building, they have crafted this excellent mix of big-room jammers. Watch out for Jubilee’s bass bombs in the middle, that Blackfinger track plus an impromptu goofyfoot Stanky Legg just made us trip over a mail crate.

Audio: East Village Radio 3/13
- story THE FADER
Last Friday on The Let Out (our weekly show on East Village Radio, made possible by Dewars), Nick Catchdubs came through to play an extra special pre-FADER fort selection of jams and banter about the world’s largest mall (they have a rollercoaster). BLK JKS were going to come too, but they got stuck at soundcheck. Listen live to East Village Radio this and every following Friday from 6-8pm EST, stream last week’s audio podcast below and check out the tracklist after the jump.

A-Trak Does Not Sleep, Ever
- story THE FADER
Perhaps you already surmised A-Trak is one of those people who can subsist on <1 hour of sleep per night, but he is about to exceed all our scientific expectations. hopefully, without going Altered States on us (because, let’s face it, no one looks good with full body hair [sci fi nerd inside joke]). Monsieur Trak is embarking on the Infinity +1 tour with constant companion DJ Mehdi, kicking off this Saturday in NYC at Studio B with your boys Nick Catchdubs, Dave P and JDH. And because President Obama has ruled that no real world thing should ever occur without being documented on the internet, A-Trak is doing his patriotic duty as a Canadian in America by blogging it all on the INFINITY +1 TUMBLR where you can also win stuff because A-Trak is addicted to gambling. MEMO: one-off Tumblr accounts are the new statement shoe! Details and tour dates after the jump.
Live: Michna and Nick Catchdubs at One Step Beyond
- story THE FADER
Friday night we braved the cold and headed uptown for the unofficial holiday edition of the totally official One Step Beyond at The American Museum of Natural History. Coming right from work, we checked our coats at the door and joined the crowd amid all the models of planets. FADER fam Michna and Nick Catchdubs spun, accompanied by out of this world (Wokka Wokka) video footage from System D-128 for those moments between dancing and drinking. Was it the best place to to be on a frigid Friday night? Um, yeah.
