Video: Chikita Violenta, “Laydown”
- story THE FADER
Although this song was originally recorded in 2005 in Toronto with Broken Social Scene producer David Newfeld, it seems most of the world is just now coming around to hearing the album it came from, the Stars & Suns Sessions—maybe because we decided to include the band in our Mexico City Rock story from FADER 51, maybe the world was just sleeping. Who knows? Chikita Violenta have decided to take advantage of all the new attention by putting together this new video for “Laydown” with director Pablo Dávila, who edited together old 8mm reels found in bandmember Andrés “Guero” Velasco’s grandmother’s closet with brand new 8mm-looking footage of the band and all the folks from the original films, which just so happens to be exactly what happens in the season finale of Lost tonight as well. Oops, SPOILER ALERT. When you’re done crying, make sure to grab the mpfrees for “Laydown” and “War” here.

- story THE FADER
Mexico City’s Chikita Violenta are offering up a couple new songs via RCRD LBL. Once you get past the fact that there is a band in Mexico City that is making music that sounds a lot like Broken Social Scene (probably because they share a producer in Dave Newfield, the dude that is responsible for making BSS sound like the entire population of Canada is playing on their albums), you realize that these guys are making sweeping wall of sound songs that sound like being 16 again. Actually for real though, being 16 was kind of lame, but Chikita Violenta do make really warm pop songs that sound like being encased in a cocoon made out of guitars. Gross?

- story THE FADER
Fedoras and futbol sneakers thoroughly bedonned, Chikita Violenta just finished their dreamy, guitar-effects-pedal’d and scrumptiously harmonizing set at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort. Texas bedarned: these guys are straight Mexico City 100%, 24-7, as you may know from David Bevan’s “Mexico City Rock” feature in FADER 51. For their FIRST SHOW OUTSIDE MEXICO CITY!!!, the charming 5-piece were amazingly on point and amazingly gracious. They also make the ladies among us want to move to Mexico basically immediately. We are kind of sad New York is not a (MX) border state. Maybe next time. CHECK IT.
