Hennessy Artistry Tour Blows Up New York City

Last night New York City’s Terminal 5 hosted the final stop of the Hennessy Artistry Tour which included surprise performances by Bilal, Don Omar (viva reggaeton!), Consequence, Karen Wheeler of Soul II Soul, Q-Tip, and Queen Latifah, as well as mixology scientists, Common and The Roots. We arrived a little later than we wanted to, but were able to get the full scoop from our main man about town The Good Reverend Dr., who coincidentally has probably attended more Roots concerts than anyone who isn’t in the actual band.

Video: Consequence f. John Legend & Kanye West, “Whatever U Want’

Alright, let’s say you’re Consequence. You’re the ultimate G.O.O.D. team player, you happily give Kanye your best lyrics, you never complain when you’re own album gets little support and you never blow up any spots that aren’t meant to be blown. At least that’s how it will be as long as Kanye, John and Hype continue to fly you down to Miami to shoot consumer cam videos with megababes. And free drinks.

Video: Kanye West f. GLC & Consequence, “Spaceship”

GLC posted this five year old unreleased video on his blog and called himself, Kanye and Consequence “young dreamers.” It’s an apt description of the song from Kanye’s first album, which is about some head in the clouds hope to get out of working at the Gap. Though this is only the video of GLC’s verse, you can see Kanye foggily folding clothes in an anonymous mall clothing store. It feels like a different planet from this to this.

It’s been long enough since Kanye’s last appearance that when he jumps on “The Good…” it’s kind of startling how exciting it is. That’s no slight to Cons at all, because dude impressively doesn’t even bother breathing in his verses (punch-ins or not) and Don’t Quit Your Day Job is definitely a sleeper, but Kanye is Kanye. And it’s not even clear that he’s trying that hard.

Video: Consequence, “Breakfast of Champions”

“Breakfast of Champions” is another solid Consequence video from Rik Cordero following on the heels of last summer’s “Uncle Rahiem” and solidifying Rik as the next great gimmick king. After Hype Williams’ fisheye lens revolution of the mid-90s, Cordero’s use of filters on a low-cost high-def digital camera has changed the rap video game this year and hopefully will lead to more videos for more artists made not so much for television but spaces like right here and OnSmash where this premiered last night.
