Premiere: Woven Bones, “If You’re Gold I’m Gone” MP3
- story Peter Macia
Ever since we asked her take a California road trip for our summer music issue, meeting up with lo-fi kids from San Francisco to San Diego, the mysterious Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls and The Mayfair Set has been steadily revealing herself, both literally and figuratively. She’s played her first shows, signed her first big record deals and now unveils some more of her personal taste with the upcoming single on her Zoo Music label (with Brandon Welchez of Crocodiles), an appropriately scumbaggy little double-sided jam by Austin’s Woven Bones. The single, which you can purchase now right here, features an A and B side that both sound like drinking flat warm beer out of an old carburetor, which is actually not bad if there’s nothing else around. And since we stole a still from it for the image on the homepage, we included Oswald James’ video of Woven Bones playing another recent song, “Your Sorcery,” at Austin’s Psych Fest #2 a couple months ago. The band will be playing a record release party in Austin on October 18th at Beerland, while Dum Dum Girls will be at CMJ at the end of this month. Make sure to check them both out if you’re going to be in either town.

Video: Crocodiles, “Hollow Hollow Eyes”
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Although the 7-inch seems to be the preferred format for bands like Crocodiles to get a couple jams out into the world quickly and without fuss, we’ve always imagined them as more of an album group. Maybe someday down the line the screechy dissonance and guitar nob trickery that ends this live performance of “Hollow Hollow Eyes” (shot by the dudes at Yours Truly) will bleed into another awesome song in the middle of a solid album. Then everyone will stop worrying about who the Crocodiles are biting (wokka wokka) and just be like, “Who even cares because this shit is catchy and fun.”
At The Bar With Southern Comfort: Crocodiles “Bullet”
- story Peter Macia
The FADER is proud to present the premiere episode of our new series At The Bar With Southern Comfort, in which we travel to some of our favorite new bands’ hometowns and film them covering some of their favorite bands’ best songs. For the first one, we asked San Diego’s Crocodiles to meet us at a breezy bar where they showed up with a twanged-out version of a Misfits classic ready to go. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we travel across America racking up frequent flyer miles and good times.

Since petrol prices are back on the rise and driving a car seems less cool than ever, we decided to send one of our favorite new artists and a trusted photographer on a road trip the length of California. Their purpose: to track the genealogy of the recent lo-fi, high melody takeover of the state’s guitar pop tradition. Read More

Video: Crocodiles, “Summer of Hate”
- story THE FADER
“Summer of Hate” was a serious jammer for us from the first time we heard it, but its sweaty, aggressive guitar haze didn’t exactly hit us until we listened to it in the context of our current issue podcast. Here’s the video, it looks like Crocodiles wrangled up a neighborhood kid with a shitty video camera, had him turn on one of the in-camera effects and then let him go nuts. Seriously, this video can’t have cost more than 20 dollars, which somehow makes it even cooler.
Freeload: The FADER Issue 62 Podcast
- story THE FADER
We and you and everyone we know has been trumpeting the Summer Of Love 2009, and it was our mantra as we put together FADER Issue 62. We scoured the universe for the summeriest, most barbecuey music this year and came up with an issue that, if you scratch-and-sniff it, smells vaguely coconutty like Hawaiian Tropic (not really). As such, this issue’s podcast, presented by Bacardi B-LIVE, is about as clear a definition of what we think you should be listening to in the coming months as we could possibly make. It’s got songs from every artist in the issue from cover stars Phoenix, Major Lazer, Maluca, DJ Sega and Popo; featured power-bros Young Dro, Dum Dum Girls, Wavves, Crocodiles, Family Time Records fam, Gen Fers Omega, D-Lo and Sleepy D, Esser, CFCF, and like a trizillion more people! Download it below and listen while reading the issue, scorching hot like the sun on newsstands right now. And come back to TheFADER.com in two weeks for the free issue PDF that you can save on your computer until the robots take over.

Freeload: Crocodiles, “I Wanna Kill” + “Summer of Hate”
- story THE FADER
Following on the Fat Possum heels of Wavves and joining Zoo Music with our recent favorite Dum Dum Girls is another new grimy SoCal band named Crocodiles. Judging by the titles, these dudes are not really feeling the good vibrations so much these days, though the actual songs are not nearly as cranky. In fact, “I Wanna Kill,” despite the homicidal chorus, is actually one of the more upbeat nuggets we’ve heard from this new set of bands, and you can probably hear it live when the Crocs play a Repeal Prop 8 benefit at Ruby Room in San Diego on Saturday night. Or if you think Prop 8 is a good idea, check them at some SXSW parties where we will slap you in the face and read you the Constitution until you puke.
