RCRD LBL Freeload: Get Em Mamis, “Planet Swag”
- story THE FADER
Whoa! The ongoing collabo of Bmore legends Darkroom Productions x Get Em Mamis, the kickiest rappers South of the Jerz T-Pike, continues slaying. “Planet Swag” has a sort of “driving in the low-low with the neon runners through an anti-gravity chamber” feel. Or, more accurately, “wilin in the G4,” according to the lyrics. These are the types of independent women Jamie Foxx and Fabo sing about, get ‘em girls!

Freeload: Wale, “Hate” (prod Darkroom Productions)
- story THE FADER
Baltimore’s Darkroom Productions just started un-unreleasing tracks from the archives of their recordings for The Wire soundtracks. As Jamal Roberts, one half of DP with Juan Donovan, explains on his
blog, this one was recorded in early 2006 for Season 4 but was didn’t make the cut. On it, Wale addresses the unique brand of hatred prevalent in the DC area when a local dude starts making good.
DC will have its chance to make up for it on October 17th when Wale performs at Howard Homecoming.

FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch Series #7: Get ‘Em Mamis & Hood Headlinaz
- story THE FADER
According to Baltimore’s Get ‘Em Mamis, “They Jockin,’” the Darkroom Productions produced track they laid for the seventh edition of our FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch series, will get the elderly “doing the Yung Joc in their wheelchairs,” and our guess is that it might also spark use of the ridiculous superlative “terrawesome” (”somewhere between terrific and awesome”). Over on the record’s A-side, the whole Hood Headlinaz crew (Mata, Mali Boi, Dawgy Baggz, Jhi Ali and Gunt, as well as Wu-affiliate guest Rubbabandz) got together for their track “Tip Down.” When we asked Paper Route Recordz CEO Dawgy Baggz to explain “tipping down” to us northerners, because we though it had something to do with cars (thanks for nothing, urbandictionary.com), he said it means simply “going bananas.” Fair enough. And to wrap up this little present from us to you, artist Michael Genovese threw down some “tienda style lettering with a local Baptist church influence” on a wall in the Chicago Cultural Center and gave the two groups a little free advertising for the record’s cover. E-mail contests@thefader.com with your name and address for a copy until we run out.

Freeload: Darkroom Productions f. The Ministry, “The Baltimore Zoo” + Bonus Maino Joint
- story THE FADER
Apparently “The Baltimore Zoo” is the last song to be leaked before the release of Darkroom Productions‘ Hamsterdam album. We’re kind of bummed because that means we have to wait for the album to hear more of this stuff, considering every track we’ve heard puts us on to new rappers that we should probably be paying more attention to than we already do. This time around it’s The Ministry—rugged and approaching the vivid imagery of early Wu-Tang while still retaining Darkroom’s signature drums that sound like a dude is banging on barrels in an alley. Update: literally as we were writing this, Darkroom sent over “G For Life” by Bmore mainstay Mullyman and BK’s Maino, a bonus cut that will not be on the album, but is no less quality.

Freeload: Darkroom Productions f. Loonatyk, “Gettin Dollaz (This Is Go-Go)”
- story THE FADER
Darkroom Productions hit us off with another track from their upcoming Hamsterdam album on Koch. Seriously dudes, is every song going to be a banger like this? Part of the appeal of Darkroom is that they tend to work with really charismatic emcees across the board, from the Get ‘Em Mamis(profiled in F53) to the ultra-weird Diablo, to Loonatyk—everyone holds their own over beats that sound like they were pounded out on turned-over garbage cans backed by yogurt-thick basslines.

Freeload: Get ‘Em Mamis, “Push It 08″ + “10% Dis 08″
- story THE FADER
For a long time we were lamenting the dearth of lady rappers in our social consciousness and then BOOM, they were everywhere, and we became stoked. We have been TiVo’ing Miss Rap Supreme on el regular, and when Lil Mama can get a video in heavy-ro that looks like it was filmed in Boot Camp Click era Brooklyn, wearing a hoodie on a rooftop no less, we know something is hella hella RIGHT. Some of our fave-faves are Bmore’s Get ‘Em Mamis, who are some of the realest chicks we ever interviewed (FADER 53!) They are dropping a new mix every week this summer with freestyles over the hottest classic female MC’s (whoever says “femcees” first gets a shank in the eye) tracks. The first two? Salt n Pepa’s “Push It” and MC Lyte’s “10% Dis,” obvs our request is that Yo-Yo’s “You Can’t Play with My Yo-Yo” is next, considering it is literally one FADER staffer’s favorite song of all time, and is played at least once a week on her iPod, but usually more than that because she likes to put it on repeat it is so awesome. But anyway. Power to the chicas.

Audio: Get ‘Em Mamis, “Cold Summer”
- story THE FADER
You know Get ‘Em Mamis? They are part of the Plague Up Crew. Two hardcore chicas from down Baltimore that tear up the mic like tigers, over club beats by none other than Darkroom Productions. We are so into them that we wrote about them in FADER 53, soon to be dropped like hot diamonds all over your local newsstand. Before you race out and cop that, listen to their fired-up new single “Cold Summer”—the first single off Hamsterdam: The Album. We are so obsessed we can’t even be super effusive in this post because our love for their music has circled past enthusiasm and reached a place of heavy calm.

We’re always happy to hear something new from Darkroom Productions and especially rap from Baltimore, which seems like something that is perpetually getting off the ground and always almost about to forever blow our minds. Either way, this song, from the forthcoming Hamsterdam: The Album (out May 27th) is the first in what we’re sure will be a series of awesome songs from the album AND it sounds a little like Freeway, which we cannot be mad at.
