Freeload: Daytona f. Bun B, “Air Born” MP3

It seems to have gone relatively unnoticed that Daytona is making some of the best blunted-in-the-stairwell raps with ominous low-key beats and NY-grit since people actually did that on a regular basis. In fact, he might be the only guy doing that these days.

Freeload: Daytona, The Daytona 500 Mixtape

Look, we could spend all day YouTubing videos like NICOLAY RECREATES BOB JAMES NAUTILUS *AMAZING*, or we could use this post to list the millions of times its been sampled and how underrated Daytona is. Instead we’re just going to tell you that more than anything in awhile this tape captures a lot of the things people miss about New York rap. And it turns out none of those things are: acting like rapping is the worst job you could ever have.

Video: Daytona f. Estelle & CNN, “Stressed Out ‘08″

Oh hey look it’s a song featuring all former and current FADER artists. We’re not going to say this is the best video ever because it’s really, really not, but that’s not stopping us saying something! It has Estelle and it has Daytona and it has Capone and a somehow even bulkier NORE trading verses in a stairwell. Why don’t people trade verses more these days? Did the entire rap industry forget how awesome it sounds?

Video/Freeload: Daytona vs Tribe

Back in 2006, we ran the first ever interview with Daytona, a Bronx MC with off-the-charts swag and a refreshing ear for beats, strictly off the strength of his track “All Dem” getting crazy rewinds from Cipha Sounds every Saturday morning on Hot 97. Since then, dude has dropped occasional freestyles, but otherwise kept a profile more Cast Away than “Daytona like the beach, bitch!” But he’s back, two years later and just in time for Summer, dropping this new A Tribe Called Fresh mixtape of remade Native Tongue-related jams. The tracklist goes everywhere from “1ce Again” with Talib Kweli to a sick freestyle over Dilla’s “Workin On It” to this ‘08 version of “Lyrics 2 Go” video-ed above, co-starring fellow Gen F journeyman Kardinal and Joell Ortiz, the best “regular dude” in rap not from New Jersey.
