Q&A: Fashion Legend Jean-Charles de Castelbajac
- story THE FADER
When we last spoke to madcap French designer Jean-Charles Castelbajac in the summer of 2006 he was just getting his feet wet in US waters, relaunching his eponymous line and talking vintage Castelbajac teddybear suits and TV on the Radio. Fast-forward about six seasons and the French designer is ramping up for the launch of a brand new label, JCDC—the nickname given to him by his grime buddies. UK-based journalist Joseph Patterson caught up with Castelbajac to get the scoop on the new line (apparently Ebony Bones will perform at the debut show at London Fashion Week). Read the full interview after the jump.

Here is the video for the first single off Dizzee’s new album Tongue ‘n’ Cheek. We’re still trying to wrap our heads around this collabo, but enjoy the kookiness in the interim.

Just kidding. Here’s Dizzee Rascal’s new single with Armand Van Helden though. It’s “Bonkers”!

Prancehall’s Bass Odyssey, Part 42
- story THE FADER
Above is the video for Newham Generals’ latest single, “Head Get Mangled”, which uses the Holy Trinity of UK urban music video themes: bravado, torture and soft porn.
I’m yet to see a positive review of the single so I’m saying I like it just to spite everyone. Actually, I do quite like it – it’s impossible for a song featuring D Double E to sound bad. It’s just a shame they decided to add a horrible filter to the vocals, making what D Double says pretty much incomprehensible.
Newham Generals showed up at the NME Awards with their label boss Dizzee Rascal last week. Below, you can find the full transcribe of Newham Generals-themed text messages sent to me by Friendly Fires‘ drummer, Jack, who was sat on the same table as Dizzee, D Double E and Footsie all night.

Live: Nas, N*E*R*D + Others At The Smirnoff Experience New York
- story THE FADER
A couple nights ago we hit up the New York edition of the Smirnoff Experience featuring Nas, N*E*R*D, Dizzee Rascal, Spank Rock, and somewhat unexpectedly, Grandmaster Flash. Even though Nas didn’t get on stage until around 1:30 in the morning, we were plied with the free drinks and crowd-wowing performances from N*E*R*D and Spank Rock. By the time Nas hit the stage (along with Kelis, subbing in for Lauryn Hill on “If I Ruled The World”), it was clear that—free drinks or not—we made the right choice in coming out to the event.

The Newham Generals have almost been ruined since signing to Dizzee Rascal’s Dirtee Stank label. It seems as if he signed them with the intention of doing little more than getting them to warm up for him at his shows around the world. They’ve been promising an album since 2006, which is yet to show any real signs of being released. It’s destined to be a disappointment. How can it be anything else after leaving fans waiting so long? Apart from a mixtape of some old tracks and a really cheap video for “Frontline”, they have little to show for their career so far.
Anyway, they turned up on Logan Sama’s radio show this week with lots of promises, but also lots of new bars. At the end of the show, they freestyled on old and new grime, UK house and even some bassline—namely Mr Virgo’s “Hypnotiq”, which can be best described, mathematically, as Benga and Coki’s “Night” multiplied by Nastee Boi’s “Bangorz”, to the power of T2. In short, one of the tracks of the summer. Have a listen to the full set below.

Video: Dizzee Rascal f. Bun B, “Where Da G’s?”
- story THE FADER
This was filmed in May of 2007, so it’s weird that it’s coming out now, sans Pimp’s verse, which is probably the best of the three on the original but whatever. People make strange decisions. Like flying all the way from London to Houston to buy Gangstavision glasses with money dug out of Paddington’s ass or signing with Def Jux when you have records with UGK called “Where Da G’s?”

Wow, a Mike Skinner sighting, the return of the Murkleman and Dizzee looking like Lightspeed Champion all in one video. Christmas is early!

Yeah, this is like our zillionth (read: fifth, but we’ve only been in blog biz for a sec) post on Mr. Mills, but whatever, he’s on tour in the US right now, and it’s only fair that we keep y’all posted on what develops.
The Dirtee Stank CEO hits Houston tonight, and will be on Damage Control Radio – listen here – from Midnight to 3am Texas time (do the math yrselves).
Thursday night he takes the stage at The Engine Room, and studio time has been booked inbetween so Dizzee can hit the studio with a grip of Screwston rap luminaries to record. Don’t want to jinx it by saying exactly who (a champ and a king, that’s all the beans we’ll spill), but to call us DUMB EXCITED TO HEAR THAT SHIT would be one of the understatements of the year.
Too Grime For Prime Time
- story THE FADER
After catching Dizzee Rascal at the El Rey on Tuesday night (as pictured above, in that thugged-out Scrooge McDuck tee), we followed him on Thursday to a taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live – which turned out to be a misnomer because the show is airing this Friday night on ABC.
