Q&A: Fashion Legend Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

When we last spoke to madcap French designer Jean-Charles Castelbajac in the summer of 2006 he was just getting his feet wet in US waters, relaunching his eponymous line and talking vintage Castelbajac teddybear suits and TV on the Radio. Fast-forward about six seasons and the French designer is ramping up for the launch of a brand new label, JCDC—the nickname given to him by his grime buddies. UK-based journalist Joseph Patterson caught up with Castelbajac to get the scoop on the new line (apparently Ebony Bones will perform at the debut show at London Fashion Week). It’s sort of funny that the words “personal” and “style” get banded around so much these days, when what that actually factually means is becoming more and more nebulous. Are the jaunty haircuts and S&M-goes-to-Hollywood outfits some indicator of Rihanna’s fashion savvy? Or is someone in her glam squad referencing discarded Kelis promo on the low? Definitely confusing stuff, which makes us wonder if Grace Jones could maybe make some sense of it all.

Would you trade a successful soap opera career for an Xray Spex-ish postpunk bulldoze lifestyle? Ebony Thomas aka Ebony Bones did. “We Know All About You” has got some of that mushy British joy that must come from a lot of rain and the bars closing early. Sometimes you have to stay home and figure it out for yourself.
