FADER 50: Atlanta Rap

The last of our reprinted features from FADER #50, “Atlanta Rap” focuses on the post-Outkast dissemination of The A aesthetic. From crunk to snap to trap and everything else, the city revitalized rap and birthed a new generation of innovators, and we did our best to cover it all first. Click more to read Chris Ryan’s essay along with some of our favorite Atlanta rap videos.

FADER 50: Island Life

In our 50th issue, Edwin “Stats” Houghton, our resident expert in all things diaspora, looked back at some of the moments and musics of our past coverage of the islands that changed the way we think about and cover other moments and musics all over the world. From FADER 23’s Beenie and Tego cover story all the way up to FADER 49’s Jah Cure feature, and many points before and hopefully after, these are the songs and clashes and movements that shifted popular music before it even knew what was happening. Check the essay and photos after the jump along with some of the videos we remember most fondly.

Exclusive: Live Justice Mix for FADER 50

We were just now a week later pretty much fully recovered, mentally and physically, from Justice’s DJ set at our FADER 50 party. Our synapses were connecting. Our vocabulary was clawing back to acceptable. And our legs were much less wobbly and sore. And then some jerk sent us a recording from the night in question which sent half the office into reactive shock and the other half into convulsive hysterics. The office nurse is typing this post. Take at your own risk and happy holidays!

Free FADER 50 Mix presented by Ford Focus

We partied our brains out last night celebrating The FADER’s 50th Issue and Cornerstone’s 100th Mixtape, and while we did so Nick Catchdubs sat at home making this mix on his computer. NOT TRUE, he was totally there partying with us, as were many other people. One of us even continually said to no one in particular that it was the best party ever. As a token, we gave out this mix on a little Ford memory stick to the partygoers, and since we realize not everyone could be there, we’re now giving it (sans memory stick) to the world. Click more to get the mix and see the tracklist and thanks to everyone who came to the party.

Audio: The FADER Issue 50 Podcast

Every several weeks we write one of these blog posts exhorting you to download the audio mix of music from our current issue. We’re doing it again for FADER 50, but this time it’s a more momentous occasion because the mix is culled from our 50 Quintessential FADER Anthems (see them all on page 80 of the magazine) which we lovingly and carefully cradled from our collection to the internet. Sure, if you read the magazine you probably already have some of these songs, but do you have them all? And are they “mixed by a DJ?” And what you don’t like gifts now? Take it and enjoy some of the jams that have brought The FADER staff together over the last decade or so.

FADER 50: New York Rock
