FADER TV: Estelle Live At The FADER 55 Party
- story THE FADER
In T. Cole Rachel’s F55 cover story, he describes Estelle in their initial meeting as looking like a superhero. At the time, she happened to be coming out of wardrobe for her “No Substitute Love” video. We’re not sure if she felt like she was shooting a video last night, but onstage for our issue 55 release party, she looked (and sounded) like some kind of Wonder Woman. Her set was just long enough to inspire dudes to rampant holleration and short enough for ladies to endure some Bass Ale fueled game. Watch as she performs “Magnificent” and soak up some of that summer love in the exclusive F55 issue release party video. Special thanks to Converse for helping us make it happen.

Live: FADER 55 Party With Estelle, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson & Special Guests
- story THE FADER
Last night we headed to Le Poisson Rouge to catch a lineup of epic proportions: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson warmed up the crowd with a bunch of songs from his OUT RIGHT NOW GO BUY IT self-titled release, as well as a couple new ones we’d never heard before. While we frantically rushed the bar for some Bass Ale between sets, we enjoyed the sweet sounds of forever FADER fam DJ Lindsey and Diddy’s premiere dudes Grind Music aka Sean C & LV. Meanwhile, Estelle presumably spent a bit of time in the green room creating futuristic sunglasses and finding a drummer who could pull off crazy drum fills, and even though we couldn’t see him we knew he was great. Estelle breezed through all the songs we wanted to hear—she did some raps and some singing and unsurprisingly ended with “American Boy”—no Kanye surprise appearance, but it didn’t matter. By the end of the night everyone was dancing and happy, smiling faces all around and looking like the last hour of a wedding reception. After the jump, see more of Dorothy Hong’s photos from the party, and stay tune for exclusive video on FADER TV.

FADER 55: Crookers Feature
- story THE FADER
Mad Decent announced the release of Crookers’ E.P.Istola today, which is serendipitous because we went to Milan to kick it with Crookers and did a feature on them for FADER 55 which you can read after the jump! FUN FACT: We also got to spend some quality time with Spino, aka Spinaccio, who is Phra’s lovely Jack Russell terrier, and the namesake of the song “Secousse (Crookers Spino Remix)” by Radioclit. Phra’s girlfriend told us “spino” is slang for “a joint.” Sometimes if you listen close, you can hear Spino barking, and if you look close, you can see him in the story’s photos. He is a real power player in the Italian house scene.

FADER 55: Cumbia Feature
- story THE FADER
For more than a year now little bits of cumbia detritus have been washing up on our screens from all corners—white labels from SF’s Bersa Discos label, uncredited cumbia crunk border radio-style party blends from somewhere in TX, uncredited youtube clips of dubbed out accordion jams…After awhile we felt the need to get the full story behind these mysterious artifacts, so we enlisted the most well-rounded cumbiologist we know; DJ /Rupture aka writer Jace Clayton, to get on the case.
Having been involved in everything from remixes to chicha and Colombian roots reissues, Jace seemed uniquely positioned to give us an overview of the century old genre, so we took him at his word when he said Buenos Aires was the current hot spot and the ultimate origin point of much of the stuff we’d been hearing and hearing about. One plane ticket later, Jace and photographer Gabriele Stabile had embarked on a documentary mission to BA that resulted in a Summer Music issue feature. And now here it is in web-form; back on our screens, where it all started. After you’re done reading the feature, check out Jace guest columning this week’s Ghetto Palms on cumbia here.

FADER 55: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson Cover Story
- story THE FADER
Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson probably isn’t going to make anyone’s summer brighter, but he is writing songs of regret and disappointment that are there waiting for us when things don’t quite work out, which ironically makes us feel better knowing we have a miserable comrade. You can’t be happy all the time after all, but getting your mug on the cover of The FADER is pretty cool, as is the rest of the subsequent media attention. Read David Bevan’s story from our Summer Music issue after the jump and make sure to catch Miles playing in New York in the next couple weeks if you’re around.

FADER 55: Estelle Cover Story
- story THE FADER
Estelle’s “American Boy” has already assumed its position in nearly everyone’s barbecue rotation, and now the followup singles from Shine are simmering as well. Not to say we told you so, but read T Cole Rachel’s feature from our current Summer Music issue on the Girl of the Summer (don’t accept any substitutes) after the jump.

The FADER Issue 55 Free Download
- story THE FADER
The FADER Summer Music Issue is the issue where we throw all the hottest of heatrocks into our glossy mag in anticipation of the days when we’ll be standing outside eating ice cream or whatever and multiple cars will go by, all playing the songs that are contained between the pages of our magazine. On the front cover we have the undeniable Estelle, poised to become the next megastar and dropping catchy jam after catchy jam, and on the flipside we’ve got Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, there because he creates lush pop songs for the 4am train rides slash ultra introspective moments that come at the tail end of every night. In between those covers we’ve got Diddy’s next producers Ryan Leslie (you know you love “Diamond Girl”) and Sean C and LV, who are responsible for pretty much every banger coming out of New York lately. We’ve also got a feature on the bedroom dance music of Cumbia, Abe Vigoda’s summertime melancholy and Crookers’ next level raveups. And all that comes withouth us even mentioning our Gen F lineup, featuring profiles on the summeriest of summertime bands Windsurf, Lindstrom’s endless space disco, 77Klash’s dancehall/everything hybrid and Whalebones’ Seattle folk among a whole bunch of other stuff. We know we say this pretty much constantly, but you can download this for free, as in ZERO dollars, as in no money. It doesn’t get better than that.
