FADER 58: Santos Party House Feature
- story Matthew Schnipper
- photo Gabriele Stabile
In 2008, Santos Party House was the backbone of our music listening experience in New York. It seemed like every person worth checking out stopped in to take advantage of the good vibes and great soundsystem. To capture Santos’ big moment in music, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper spoke with the four founders of the club about their dedication to the simple art of People Having Fun.
FADER 58: No Age Cover Story and Interview
- story Eric Ducker

No Age may have been one of the unlikely successes of 2008, but really, was it that much of a surprise? The duo of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall have shown just how far a modest band can go on the strength of good music, good ideas and good vibes. We haven’t been able to shut up about them since the first time we saw them in 2007. Since then we’ve featured them three times in the magazine, culminating in us putting them on the back cover of our 10th anniversary issue. After the jump read that story with an extended version of our interview with No Age only available on TheFADER.com.
Freeload/Audio: Radioclit and Mumdance Remix “Township Funk”
- story THE FADER
If you are reading this, we are assuming you are at least moderately interested in music and have hopefully heard DJ Mujava’s “Township Funk” by now. We have put it up several times but most recently in the FADER 58 podcast. Why? Because Mujava is in the Gen F section of that issue and his song sounds particularly ill blended into No Age’s “Teen Creeps.” Read the Gen F story after the jump, but first, listen to a couple new iterations of “Township Funk” from our buddies Radioclit and Mumdance. Radioclit’s is a remix you may have heard bouncing around. The Mumdance joint, with assists from Jammer and C. Gritz is less a remix than a club jam loosely wrapped around “Township Funk.” The trio made it to promote their recent live collaborations in and around London.

Dubious Decisions Department: The Muslims Change Their Name To The Soft Pack
- story THE FADER
In a confounding move that will go down in history forever (read: some blogs will talk about it briefly), The Muslims have changed their band name to The Soft Pack. Presumably, this is because suddenly a bunch of white dudes calling themselves The Muslims doesn’t seem like such a good idea, but we’re going to go ahead and say the change is the bad idea, especially since “soft pack” reminds us of shitty tasting cookies. We say change it back, and in tribute we are web-publishing our Gen F on THE MUSLIMS from FADER 58, on stands now.
Update: As has been pointed out to us by salty Nikkos, white dudes can be Muslims, too. Good point, but can San Diegans be Muslims?? Heh?
Freeload: The FADER Issue 58 Podcast
- story THE FADER
The best part about putting these podcasts together every issue is hearing the songs that have become separate favorites all in one place, which not only reminds us why we loved them in the first place but also let’s us know that we are doing a pretty good job. This issue—our 10th anniversary—was no different, though after a quick listen, our first thought was, This is a diverse and exciting collection of music, and our second thought was, How are we not tired of “Pop Champagne” yet? Along with Ron Browz’s new anthem, we have songs from Ye and No Age, Mujava and the Muslims, Big Pink, Illa J and many more. Grab the mix below and get the tracklist after the jump.

FADER 58: Kanye West Cover Story and Interview
- story Peter Macia
- photo Jason Nocito
When we decided to put Kanye West on the front cover of our tenth anniversary issue, we didn’t know our release date and his would coincide so perfectly: His new album, 808’s & Heartbreak came out yesterday and FADER 58 is out today. While we will probably not sell a million copies of our magazine (we don’t print that many), things are looking pretty good for Mr West. 808’s is already number one on iTunes, and he has been the primary topic of discussion on blogs, gossip columns and talk shows for the last month. Our interest, however, goes beyond conjecture about his private life and heated auto-tune debates, so we went to Los Angeles a couple months ago and visited Kanye at his house and in the studio for our world exclusive cover story. After the jump, read the full story and interview from our new issue along with exclusive photos only available on TheFADER.com.

- story THE FADER
Over the last year, we spent a lot of time discussing how to commemorate The FADER’s tenth anniversary. We had recently combed the archives for FADER 50, so we wanted to make this issue a statement not about where we had been but where we are going. Then we realized that that is what we do with every issue, so, after much debate, we decided to focus on those people who have continually served as content providers for the pages of the magazine and website: the curators, selectors, DJs, gallerists, party throwers and artists who always give us something to write about. For the last few years, no two artists have given us more to ponder than Kanye West and No Age, so why not put them both on the covers? In between, we’ve got stories and interviews with the Santos Party House crew, Wendy Yao of Ooga Booga, Oak’s gentlemen, dancehall godfather Bounty Killer, Cipha Sounds, the minds behind Partizan and The Directors Bureau, a peek into Rare Book Room studios, and a feature on DJ/producer/label head/etc Erol Alkan. Of course, we fill the rest of the pages with more of our regular coverage of future greatness, as well. As FADER boss Julianne Shepherd wrote in her editor’s letter in the issue, “We believe that no culture should be separate, that everyone should have access, that we all should be together. So let’s celebrate.” Do just that by downloading FADER Number 58, our Tenth Anniversary Special, for free below, and check back this week and beyond as we put up stories from the magazine and online exclusives only on TheFADER.com.

WORLD PREMIERE! Kanye West and No Age Cover The FADER’s 10th Anniversary Issue
- story THE FADER
Depending on where you are, The FADER’s 10th Anniversary Issue will hit newsstands and iTunes sometime in the next week or so. Since we already did a big retrospective thing in our 50th issue, we decided to just go out and get some guys from around the way for this one: KANYE WEST and NO AGE. Both covers are exclusives, so make sure to snatch this up whenever you see it, and check back Tuesday, November 25th, when we will put the whole thing up for download and begin a series of online extras only available here on TheFADER.com (and probably Kanye’s blog).
