Freeload: Fam-Lay f. Pharrell, “Get That Work Up”
- story THE FADER
It would be truly ironic if FADER favorite Fam-Lay finally got an album out because Pharrell squeezed a rocked up version of an old song into Fast & Furious. It seems like it would’ve been a lot easier to just listen to us when we told you he was a killer two years ago, Record Industry. Then again, what are we talking about? This song was sent to us in an email that seemingly is promoting Fam-Lay’s Twitter and blog and not much else. Which is fine because that’s where we found this clip of his new web series “Boots & Wigs,” in which he will apparently dance around in women’s bathrooms and pose next to women’s boots. The man is a good idea factory! Somebody pay him for it.

Video: Pitbull f. Pharrell, “Blanco”
- story THE FADER
Looking at the the tracklist for the Fast & Furious soundtrack, released on Star Trak this week, it’s not hard to imagine Pharrell and Chad sitting on their dirtbikes laughing about all the money they got for what appears to be a lot of leftovers—we wrote about Fam-Lay’s (now Shark City Click) “Head Bust” in early 2007! But then we realized none of this stuff ever actually saw the light of day on an actual release, so maybe it’s not so insidious after all. Plus, not only does the soundtrack represent for a lot of the reggaeton/Latino artists we’ve had in the magazine, a couple of them, Don Omar and Tego Calderon are in the movie…acting…probably better than some of the actors. Wouldn’t be the first time! Here’s the video for Pharrell and Pitbull’s single off the soundtrack, one of FIVE Pit tracks on there, in which they offer some POV gentleman clubbing.

Super Bowl Commercials Terrible, Lil Wayne Still Awesome
- story THE FADER
Last night was one of the more heartwrenching Super Bowls, opened by a lip-syncing Jennifer Hudson, silent Sully Sullenberger, pocket Petraeus, split by snack-hater Springsteen and peppered with a ton of bad commercials (we’re looking you, Danica Patrick and Talking Flowers). But our memory of it remains fairly golden since we popped Wayne and Young Money’s new mixtape on the hi-fi every time we sensed something suspicious. We ended up listening to it three times the whole way through, incidentally, and it held up pretty well. Even this Pharrell track that is making its way around separately stayed okay, probably because P clearly had his verse written by one of the unsung heroes of rap, Fam-Lay.

Schnipper’s Slept On
- story THE FADER
Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Fam-lay “Da Beeper Record” 12-inch. Watch the video for “Beeper” here, buy it nowhere and read about it after the jump.
Freeload: Fam-Lay, “War Music”
- story THE FADER
As he is wont to do, Noz just broke this new Fam-Lay track off his upcoming mixtape Dirtyway. We’re seeking details on when it’s coming out and whether it will be all afrobeat samples like “War Music” or not, but we’re going to say this is a good look for Fam as his style has always been unorthodox and bounces all over this rhythm. Also, SOMEBODY PUT THIS DUDE’S ALBUM OUT.
