Fan Death, “Cannibal” MP3

For all you New Yorkers and people who may one day visit New York, please make your way to Brooklyn’s Bedouin Tent on Atlantic Avenue between Bond and Nevins (closer to Bond). They make the most sumptuous pita you’ll ever eat. They also bump major Arabic jams while you eat off wooden plates, many of which sound mysteriously similar to the tangy opening disco moments of Fan Death’s “Cannibal.” A Canadian duo of self-confessed Cure lovers, they’ve opened their door to Bollywood and balalaikas on this plucky track. They’re still well within their comfort zone of goth-disco—admittedly, a strange enclosure to be comfortable in—but they make it work, brushing against the ends with soft opium strokes. Actually they’re Canadian so it’s probably not opium so much as whatever beer is on sale at Tim Horton’s. They play Canadian disco in the donut drive-through we heard.

Fan Death’s Dandi Wind came up with the concept for the group’s new video, and if Harmony Korine’s Mr. Lonely didn’t already exist, we would say it is a work of unmitigated genius. Actually, it still kind of is. Shot by Nathan Drillot, directed by Dandi. (via KTB)

We must admit, we did not remember this eerie Q Lazzarus song “Goodbye Horses” from the ’80s despite feeling pretty secure in the magnitude of our synth-pop brain-library. According to wikipedia it was featured in a bunch of movies we vaguely remember seeing? Like Clerks II? [Ed. Like the penis tuck scene in "Silence of the Lambs"? Worst best scene of the 90s—Q Lazzarus so bummed].’Couve disco divas Fan Death remembers it well and does a bang-up cover, the synths a little more crystalline and NOW and the vox are still deep and husky but a little smokier, and they do not sound totally androgynous [Ed. See above] like Q Lazzarus.

YouTubes Of People Enjoying Music From The New Issue Of The FADER
- story THE FADER
Last week, Erol Alkan, who is the subject of a big feature in The FADER #58, sent us the above embedded video of a kid adding an acoustic guitar part to “Veronica’s Veil” by Fan Death, who are in the Gen F section of #58. (While, you’re at it, check out tygerbomb1992 playing guitar to Glass Candy and MGMT as well.) Then this morning No Age, who are on the back cover of #58, posted a video of a girl in bright green pants dancing to their song “Cappo” at seven in the morning. But what’s funny is that we went to a No Age show last night, and thirty people were doing this exact same dance. Maybe this is the next Crank That Soulja Boy phenomenon.

How do you come up with ideas for videos? Do you sit around and say “Our song is about a veil this lady, who was somehow Jesus-related, was wearing when she wiped his brow?” Something like that (wikipedia it, ok). So are you like “primary colors and emotional veil pulling! Veil tug of war! Mexican church! Ocean sunset and lava rocks jutting!” If we made a video for this song it would be in the past. We would travel back in time before Veronica was born, and we would get married to her and keep her home so she didn’t mess with Jesus because that seems dangerous. It would be both a documentary and a live action feature. We would come back to the Canadian future and meet Fan Death and we would collaborate. Or we would just get high and make a video on our Powerbook of us watching this.

When you pick up the next issue of The FADER you will see a Gen F on Vancouver’s death disco duo Fan Death—comprised of Dandilion Wind Opaine and Marta Jaciubek-McKeever— whose single “Veronica’s Veil” has been a hit on our Friday radio show of late. They’ve turned Ladyhawke’s originally pretty poppy jawn (video above) into a total Moroder nightmare, and we are recommending it as a soundtrack for watching the Dow plummet… makes it feel more romantic.
