Freeload: Best of DJ Quik Mixtape by Matthew Africa
- story THE FADER
We were feeling pretty Garfield (MONDAYS!) til we started jamming this extra thorough mix of “America’s Most Complete Artist.” Now we are remembering the donk-ish Chevy Monte Carlo (indestructable!) we pushed in high school and wondering if it’s too early for a 40. So says Matthew Africa of the genius/kingdom of DJ Quik:
I made this mix because people sleep on DJ Quik. Maybe they’ve forgotten or maybe they never understood, but people don’t get the breadth or depth of his talent.
If you are one of those people, kill yoself! And find that Fixxers album, it’s one of the unheralded gems of the 21st century.

The Fixxers Self-Release Midnight Life Album on MySpace!
- story THE FADER
Sometimes we wish for shelved albums to come out fully knowing it won’t happen, so when we mentioned the other day our flickering candle for The Fixxers’ Midnight Life, it was with similar skepticism. But suddenly this morning, after months of rumors of Quik turning down offers and pulling the album from negotiations, here it is, available for download on
Secret Music Group’s MySpace page (don’t click on their real website because it doesn’t exist), and it is as awesome as
we’ve been trying to tell you. “Can U Werk Wit Dat” is on there as is “So Good,” but so are a bunch of insane nü-G-funk jams no one has heard until now (you can hear samples before you buy), and the whole thing is only $11.88! Does this sound like a commercial? It is! A free one! We love this shit! Go buy it.
UPDATE: DO NOT BUY THIS, PEOPLE. SOME DICK JACKED QUIK’S MYSPACE AND LEAKED HIS ALBUM. GO BUY QUIK’S WHOLE CATALOG FROM SOMEWHERE OR JUST SEND QUIK AN EMAIL AND TELL HIM YOU LOVE HIS MUSIC.
FADER 48: Quik Cover Story
- story THE FADER
The Fixxers just put out a new mixtape, but they are asking that we actually pay for it and they ship it to us which is clearly not going to happen. However, we still love dudes, so we’ll put up Eddie Stats’ feature on them from Issue 48.
