Video: Freeway f. Jakk Frost & Hollewood Playboi, “Free Money Conglomerate”
Call us classicists, but Freeway remains one of our favorite rappers. We are also great admirers of his beard, which according to this video has grown exponentially more awesome since we last saw him (perhaps Freeway’s beard growth was encouraged by its eponymous song, “Freeway’s Beard“). We ran the track back a few times, trying to figure out if Free actually rhymed “rap hippopotamus” with “free money conglomerate.” It sounds like it, but either way he’s going hard, particularly with the ever deepening rasp catching on the low end of his voice and lines like “put em over my knee and spank all of ‘em” (regarding wack rappers). The other dudes sound good too, but we’re all about Freeway. (via Nahright)
NYC: Freeway & Styles P at the Rock the Block Festival
- story THE FADER
If you just came to Earth and didn’t know what the deal was with music and we then took you to a Freeway show you would be like, “Why is this guy yelling at me? Is he about to cry? I guess it doesn’t matter because this is awesome.” And if we took you to a Styles P show you’d be like, “Wow that guy sounds so ominous, he could be threatening my entire family and I would still think it sounded cool.” This weekend August 6th and 7th at the Rock the Block festival at Southpaw you can experience both options, which is pretty intimidating but totally worth your time and energy. Get your tickets here.
Freeload: Young Chris & Freeway, “Last Two” MP3
- story THE FADER
How many people made it to Coney Island at the end of that movie The Warriors? Already, you can see where we’re going with this. We’ve lamented the demise of Rocafella far too many times in this space, but it still hurts when former State Property members can get together and make good music to little acclaim. The talent is still there! It always was.

Live: Wale and Friends at Highline Ballroom
- story THE FADER
We’ve seen Wale perform so many times since featuring him in F44 that we’re well past the paternal conceitedness we once felt so rightfully entitled to. At this point we’re just happy he can afford to drape himself in Louis Vuitton sweater/hat combos. Aside from the new digs though, the DMV’s greatest hope has also gained many a new friend, displaying a wealth of them last night at Highline Ballroom. Wale was backed by legendary go-go band UCB, who got extra loose during renditions of Junkyard Band’s “Sardines,” EU’s “Da Butt,” and their very own (and very amazing), “Sexy Lady.” After he warned that it was about to get “real hip hop in here,” out jumps Freeway (beard still sticking out) for his verse on “What We Do,” followed by Young Chris, who sounded angelic over UCB’s rendition of The Young Gunz ski lodge fail-safe, “No Better Love.” The three then broke into an impromptu cipher, in which most appropriately both Rhymefest and Craig G could be seen offstage waiting to be waved home. Neither ended up onstage, but before closing things off with “Nike Boots,” Wale brought out Ryan Leslie for “Addicted,” finally apologizing for being a “cheater.” Apology accepted. Also in attendance were 9th Wonder and (in a well protected VIP area) ex-Def Jam president, Jay-Z.

Freeload: Slim feat. Jadakiss and Freeway, “So Fly (Remix)”
- story THE FADER
Our love for the S, the L, the I, the M is no secret. Whether solo or with 112, his whispery, high-pitched croon is one of pop’s most underappreciated voices, falling somewhere between bedroom player smoothness and a Hanna-Barbera cartoon based around the 1997 Bad Boy Records roster (we saw the pilot in a fever dream once, it’s basically Snorks with Black Rob). We kinda wish that unique voice was a little more prominent on the remix for his new single, “So Fly” (check the original and more tunes at his MySpace) but beggars can’t be choosers. Free and J-To-The-Mwah make up for it with little singsongy flows of their own, plus Jada says “bozak” on his second R&B remix in a row. It’s kind of cute. Using the word “bozak,” not said bozak, which we can’t report on conclusively. Pause?

Freeload: DMX f. Freeway, “Where You Been”
- story THE FADER
Dark Man X isn’t the first artist to rhetorically ask himself “Where you been?” on a comeback single, and he certainly won’t be the last. But the thing is, the world knows EXACTLY where he has been, and has reported on it with remarkable consistency! Scamming the Mayo Clinic, battling SWAT teams, speeding in a ‘66 Nova with his name on it, and denying the existence of Barack Obama, with assorted court dates and ASCPA bum-outs thrown in the mix every few weeks just to keep things fresh. That said, if X keeps rapping over “Dance To The Drummer’s Beat” with Freeway, we will keep pretending he was quietly hiding in the desert this whole time. Earl, get well soon!

Audio: Rick Ross f. Freeway & Fabolous, “Gettin Mine”
- story THE FADER
According to the internet, the entire music industry except Rick Ross is pretty much asleep. Actually, we guess Freeway and Fabolous are also not asleep, and are a pretty good pairing even though they are polar opposites.
Video: Freeway, “It’s Over/Lights Get Low”
- story THE FADER
It’s pretty cool how everyone is finally starting to experiment with ways to push an album, release videos and music and actually try a little harder to earn our money. Even Freeway, whose album could not possibly have been lower on the Def Jam totem pole, is getting three simultaneous videos out to the public because those videos obviously didn’t cost $1 million apiece. Fortunately for us, the music is deserving of more than one video. In fact, we wouldn’t mind if every song off Free at Last got a video, especially if it means more Drama cameos. He’s the king.

What a great concept for a video: Freeway walking around shaking people’s hands. One of our writers probably shook Freeway’s hand when he met him for this Q+A in FADER 49. Maybe they hugged. Maybe they just stared at each other. But they definitely talked.

There is no Freeway song that isn’t an intense Freeway song, but this is actually physically stressful to listen to. Like HEY WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS WHATEVER IT IS. LET’S GO RUN SOMEWHERE OR VOTE OR SOMETHING. Free at Last comes out next Tuesday and is definitely worth paying money for.
