The ABSOLUT FADER Visionary Podcast #4 — Leads To
- story THE FADER
Turning the halfway corner in the Visionary Podcast series, curated by The FADER and presented by ABSOLUT as part of our ongoing efforts to advance and advocate the art and music we love, we come to the phrase, “Leads to.” These two open-ended words instantly made us think of some kind of narrative, so we tried to tell a little story through the song titles—a story that of course ends with us soaking up some sun.
After going fairly hard on #3, we mellowed this one out a little bit, traversing its length with the coastal vibes of Foreign Born, the slightly nautical Friend, a fluid jam from White Denim, Purple Wowness via a Joker and Ginz remix and the wobbly pop of our man Theophilus London. Check the tracklist after the jump, and come back soon for “Something” on podcast #5.

Lefse Records Compilation (Neon Indian, Friend etc)
- story Peter Macia
Neon Indian\’s debut LP, Psychic Chasms, sounds like Discovery-era Daft Punk if they were one awesome kid and had zero money. It’s coming out on October 13th on Lefse Records, and for a time it seemed like he was Lefse’s ticket to ride, but judging by the compilation sent over by the label, they are actually loaded with lo-fi hitmakers of many colors—folky pop, semi-grunge, ambient electronics, you name it. Visit Lefse’s site to get free music from most of the artists on the comp and check after the jump for the tracklist and brief histories of every song included here.

Freeload: Memory Cassette, “Last One Awake” (Friend Version) MP3
- story THE FADER
Memory Cassette is soon to have a 7-inch on FADER favorite labels Acephale and Sincerely Yours, from which “Last One Awake” is taken. This remix by new friend Friend we caught over at Discobelle. That seems like a lot to report for a nice song. What we do want to tell you is that apparently “Friend Version” means “version that sounds like Stevie Nicks on ’ludes in the Caribbean.” Much of Memory Cassette, who was/is Weird Tapes, sounds like riding a carousel in the dark, and if that’s your thing there are many mp3s to be downloaded on his site.

Video/Freeload: Friend, “Doki” MP3
- story THE FADER
Some other website recently posted about The-Dream being “smarter than we thought” because “The-Dream” is Google friendlier than just “The Dream.” Which got us thinking—doesn’t the ability to write a ton of amazing songs make you pretty smart? Like did they mean they now believe he is a total genius because he knows how url’s work? That actually seem pretty obvious. Regardless, this guy Friend apparently doesn’t care about any of that stuff because we can’t even search our own site for previous posts we’ve put about him. However, we’re pretty sure he’s smart because all of his songs have been really great so far and the video for “Doki” is made of solarized clips from Wong Kar Wai movies, which only super intelligent dorks like. “Doki” is from Friend’s new Shima EP, some more of which you can hear on his MySpace.

- story THE FADER
We didn’t think Air France could get any summerier, but London’s Friend has achieved the impossible. Dude re-edited their breezy, seaside pop nugget and transformed it into the audio equivalent of boat shoes. We are listening to this and imagining ourselves swimming with rare albino dolphins, so appropriately pink. Pass the mojitos.

- story THE FADER
Last summer, when we put up his laid back jam, “Dreams,” London-based graphic artist and bedroom producer Friend was a complete unknown with a mere two songs and one remix to his credit. Four months later, he has THREE SONGS! And the new one is so crazily different from the other two that we actually aren’t sure if it should be talked about in the same post. “Dreams” and “Secret” were definitely of the disco revival, but “Black Keys” is a synth-sitar/steel drum/pan flute siesta epic and, if we’re correct, dude sings on it, something we weren’t aware he could do. We asked Friend aka Jesse Kanda what was going on and he said, “I am acquiring some new instruments soon so hopefully I can take my music where I want it to go..” Keep going to this place, Friend.

Mr Paul Devro recently put a post up on the Mad Decent blog detailing the rags to riches story of one Friend, a graphic design wunderkind and natural disco dan. We especially are feeling “Dreams” as day turns to night because, well, it sounds like when we are slipping out of our work duds and into a hot tub with a bunch of badass models. Also worth getting over there is Friend’s July mix, a Metronomy remix and another original called “Secret”.
