Hudson Mohawke Exclusive FADER Mix + Q+A
- story Matthew Schnipper
Hudson Mohawke didn’t want to give a tracklist for this exclusive FADER mix, perhaps because he didn’t want us to know the contents of the inside of his mind. Beatboxing, grime, new jack swing, glitchy stuff with big bass, futuristic R&B all make up parts of the mix, just like they do his music. Mohawke’s debut album Butter was just released and it’s a doozy, steady beat-based but completely manic with extra flairs zesting every track. The man has an eye for detail. If you haven’t yet checked out his music, download this killer primer he made of Butter and then check out his mix below. You should also check out his video game, Butterstar Galactica,” where you get to be a piece of butter. After the jump, we checked in with young Hudson about dream states, R&B hopes and weed.

Hudson Mohawke’s Butter Sampler MP3
- story Peter Macia
Young Hudson Mohawke, whose “Rising 5″ debuted here and is included on our first Visionary Podcast, has a new album coming out October 12th on Warp Records. It’s called Butter, it’s full of monstrous, knocking electronic funk jams that sometimes make zero sense and the cover looks like a dream we had after drinking too much Cisco on the beach. Thanks to Konx Om Pax and Dom Sum from LuckyMe for that last one. Warp just released a sampler of Butter snippets for free download and bunch of tour dates all over the damn place. The former is below, the latter after the jump.

Rustie, “FACT Mixtape 79″ MP3
The Glasgow-based producer/DJ Rustie just won our hearts with his latest mixtape for FACT Magazine: he put like everyone we love (Sweat.X, Hudson Mohawke, The-Dream etc) on it. He even included our longtime favorite “Georgia Peach”—the Atlantan “downtown” rapper Rasheeda! Like dude, people in America don’t even check for Rasheeda! How focused is your game! He also mixed some of his own sickass productions—like kicking back in the “strobe” room with a pack of gum and a bubble bath—with Ace Hood and Lil Scrappy. What do Southern rappers sound like in Glaswegian? How can we be down? Cop the mixtape over at FACT mag and check the bazonkos track list after the jump.

The ABSOLUT FADER Visionary Podcast #1 — Doing
- story THE FADER
Welcome to the first Visionary Podcast, curated by The FADER and presented by ABSOLUT, as part of our ongoing efforts to advance and advocate the art and music we love. With these words—Doing Things Differently Leads to Something Exceptional—and accompanying awesome visual interpretations of those words by director Rupert Sanders as inspiration, we set about scouring our music libraries for the new songs that are doing it for us the most these days. The first of these podcasts is loosely associated with the word and image for “Doing.” Doing anything basically, but as The FADER is known to do, we decided to make it mostly about having a good time—going surfing, hanging out with friends and romances, and of course, dancing your face off. Below, download the Visionary Podcast #1 with music from Smith Westerns, The Drums, Major Lazer, Washed Out and Hudson Mohawke. Check the tracklist after the jump, and come back in one week for #2, inspired by Things.

Premiere: Hudson Mohawke, “Rising 5″ MP3
- story Matthew Schnipper
The first question we asked upon hearing Hudson Mohawke’s upcoming debut album Butter (Oct 13, Warp) was, “How did he make this?” His label told us they had no idea. Inevitably, the answer will be that he made it on some malleable computer software, and it will be a little mindblowing to find out such expansive bombs were bottled from a tiny Scottish motherboard. “Rising 5,” from Butter, feels more snappy and organic than some of his weird, futuristic beatmaking pals like labelmate Flying Lotus—less Massive Attack breathy electronica than big beat-ish free jazz with bone crack snare and cybernetic harp (and, if we’re not crazy, maybe a sample of Jay-Z saying “yep”). HudMo will be touring to preview the album and the dates are after the jump.
