HVW8 International Podcast Vol. 12: Hawthorne Headhunters Part II
- story Peter Macia
It’s feeling very Los Angeles in New York today since the wet blanket of recent jungle heat decided to lift itself off the figurative bozack and you can actually go outside without instantly looking like a glazed donut. It’s hot, but crisp with a little breeze, just like coastal California, which is perfect timing for the latest volume of LA-based HVW8 podcast, this time with the swirly, synthy rap/funk/jazz/electro/r&b/other stuff band the Hawthorne Headhunters. Podcast is a bit of a misnomer, though, since this is actually a live recording of the band playing HVW8’s Spaulding Avenue gallery space. Nice loose jamming and good vibes from the group whose self-titled EP HVW8 recently put out. Blast while the sun is out because the next thing you know we’ll all be wrapped in 19 layers to keep from freezing our things off.

Video: Red, “I Should Tell Ya Momma On You”
- story Peter Macia
Way back in January of this year, we briefly retold the story of Red the G-Funk Beatboxer and said that he had a chance to topple Animal Collective as the mayor of Jam City. We also said his single was going to be out in February. So, while both of those things might seem a little presumptuous in retrospect, we can at least now say with full confirmation that Red’s first single is available on iTunes right now via HVW8, that it still jams hard, and that it has two incredibly good remixes by FADER favorites Dam Funk and CHOPS. Stones Throw is putting it out on 45 as well, and we’ll throw the link up for that as soon as they do. Sales proceeds will go to getting Red back on his feet after some hard times, so buy several copies and give them away as tokens of your good taste.

ART PARTY: Parra at HVW8 in LA
- story THE FADER
Creator of both birds who wear high heels and women with beaks, Belgian Dutch (sorry dude, thinking about waffles) artist Parra will be showing new work at Los Angeles’ HVW8 Art & Design Gallery starting tomorrow, April 4th, through May 9th. They’re having a little party to kick things off starting at an undesignated time, so RSVP and go sit in the parking lot behind the building, where the real shit pops off!
Video: Red the Homeless G-Funk Beatboxer
- story THE FADER
This is quite possibly going to unseat Animal Collective as our favorite music of 2009 so far. Red, a homeless gentleman in Los Angeles, showed up behind the HVW8 gallery late last year and proceeded to beatbox/sing his original composition “I Should Tell Your Mama On You,” which sounds like Ginuwine filtered through Roger Troutman and performed by a 90-year-old barbershop singer. It is amazing. Red is now recording this song for a proper February single with HVW8’s help and recently gave a video update with another new song called “Ghost Ride The Hips.” Watch it after the jump and follow Red’s story on the HVW8 blog.
