Live: Icy Demons Use A Huge Gourd

We would’ve guessed it’d be hard to convince a roomful of sweaty New Yorkers what it’s like to be cold, broke, and righteous about it all in dead-winter Chicago, but we also would’ve guessed a band named Icy Demons would be producing Norwegian black metal, so maybe we should give up on guessing for a while. Luckily we don’t have to guess about Icy Demons, because we have been singing their praises throughout the FADER office for awhile now.

Tuesday we hopped over to the Knitting Factory to hear them play some “old” songs (from way back in 2006) and a few excellent new ones, all of which were just the kind of sneakily epic that you’d hope for from a band with six members and just as many ways to kill the term “genre”. Watching them was like that time our car broke down and we ended up at a surfer cocktail party where the phone didn’t work, people looked at us weird and we thought we saw a body in the pool but it was just an empty keg. Fun times, weird times, but definitely interesting. If you’re in, uh, Indiana or Cairo in the next couple days you can catch their catchy ‘n’ disturbing summer party tunes live before their tour ends. If not, every member is involved in about a billion other projects (including but not limited to Man Man, Chandelier, Herculaneum, and the defunct Need New Body) , so you should be able to catch at least one of them doing something exciting sometime soon.

We first stumbled upon the this brilliant Icy Demons song last year when it was given away on the Obey Your Brain site and thought it was the band’s best. They’ve since taken it down and put it on Icy Demon’s newest album called, ta-da Miami Ice, and now RCRD LBL has the song up once again for giveaway. The internet is just like bartering without all the effort of producing something, isn’t it? You just have to wait around and someone will give you what you want. We like the Demons offline too though and are willing to wait for their show with Extra Golden at the Knitting Factory in NYC on July 29th which is part of their summer tour. It’s gonna be polyrhythm central in there so don’t even try to come if you got flat feet.

We’re gonna go on a limb and say it: We miss Need New Body. In this (unfortunately) post NNB world we live in, Icy Demons and Man Man are still here, and, can we be honest and say that sometimes Man Man just isn’t doing it for us in the pure neon tanktop not good/good just a little drugs but only the good kind way that NNB did? So, fortunately for us, the sometimes coming together of Icy Demons (Bablicon, dudes!) has come together to make a jazzdance seesaw of which we have a new song to offer you. “Spywatchers” pounces surfed out and swaying, sandbags, kazoos and hum-buzz. Icy Demons live in palm trees, oases, Cape Cod in the winter when it’s lonely but calm, barber shops that are cheap, in that weird mask store where you grew up that smelled like cats, in the chest your grama keeps with immigrant magic stored since the early teens. Sea air and confetti, crystal balls and pretty puppies. (Ed. They also have an album coming out on Obey Your Brain on July 15th)
