Video: Juicy J, “Talkin’ Shit”
- story Matthew Schnipper
Juicy J is feeling solo videos these days. And not just solo because it’s not him with Triple Six, but because it’s just him walking around alone. This black and white video for “Talkin’ Shit,” a song with extremely tragic, German sounding strings, has some Blair Witch moments, only if Juicy was the witch. I ain’t never been a pussy is a great line, and we might think it was meant tongue in cheek if not delivered with a black bloc bandanna over his face. But then you notice the director’s reflection in Juicy’s sunglasses and the suspension of disbelief is kinda killed.
Video: Juicy J, “Let’s Get High”
- story Matthew Schnipper
At 1:18 of this video, Juicy J, of Three Six Mafia, walks at the camera, at you, offering a pipe and lighter. It’s got a “first taste is free” vibe, the menace of the supposedly friendly dealer. It’s not an unmenacing song, either, could certainly fit plenty well as track seven on Triple Six’s umpteenth album. But there’s something a little more magical about “Let’s Get High,” and that’s probably Juicy’s specific listing of imbibings: Ecstasy pills, Xanax pills and some Percoset goes the chorus, heavy emphasis on pills, as though he wants you to know he’s not into liquid ecstasy. It reads like a Law and Order rundown of drugs found on a criminal. Then he lists them off, counting off with numberless fingers against a column in a parking garage: Ambien, Oxycontin pills, let’s do all that/ Let’s get high let’s get high let’s get high. Wonder if DJ Paul just didn’t want on this track and that’s why it’s a solo joint. Still works clean and sober Monday afternoon—welcome to the work week.

- story THE FADER
Never, in the history of area specific posse cuts, has there been a more inaccurate chorus than that of 8Ball and the Memphis All-Stars’ “This Ain’t.” Aside from a steady stream of All-Star freestyles (we see you Starlito!), Tennessee’s been way too quiet, making a song like “This Ain’t” exactly what we want. Ball and JG lead a pack of Memphis grizzlies with too many quotables to quote, but check for the steel drum synth chop of the opening riff from Super Mario Brothers.
