FADER TV: Fashion Week Behind-the-Scenes with Kesh

On the very last day of NY fashion week we witnessed another first on the city’s schedule—Kesh’s spring ‘09 runway show at The Anonymous Gallery. The London designer/DJ made the move here a few months ago and we’ve been seeing her name pop up on fliers ever since. Still, we had literally no idea she’d been cooking a new collection in-between gigs to boot! Kesh is best known for her signature London girl style, whipping up new creations in a matter of minutes, but the new all-men’s collection is decidedly more tailored. We talked to Kesh about the London-vs-NY style conundrum and why she prefers to design for the boys and not the girls.

Freeload: Mr Martelo’s Fancy Mixtapes

In the Jedi Mind Pix section of FADER #55, we described guest picker Mr Martelo thusly:

You could try to call him on his landline in London this summer, but he wouldn’t answer; Mr Martelo’s iCal is booked through fall as Santogold’s worldwide touring DJ. We’d hire him, too, after hearing his mega-’naners productions of house, breakbeats, bassline and extra creative refixes (Rick Ross reimagined as heavy, foggy dubstep, oh hell yeahs).

Which did absolutely no justice to his hair. Neither does the above photo of Martelo with our girl Kesh but it does serve to illustrate their friendship, a friendship that resulted in a “mega-’naners” mixtape of all kinds of boogie music called Do You All Have Your 3-D Glasses?. Get it below, along with another mix from Mr Martelo by his lone self for a Nike fashion show, recently pointed in our direction by Trinitron.

Stylee Friday’s: Kesh Does LFW

Aside from being a bit of a big deal, the MAN fashion show in London, is a really really fun show because
a) it’s 100% man-focused, b) you get three indie menswear designers for the price of one and c) at least one of those three designers is destined for future fashion greatness (Cassette Playa has been part of the show in seasons past). It’s curated by Fashion East and Topman so we were pretty psyched to find out that our girl Kesh, the 21-year old fashion designer/ DJ was in the handpicked line-up. Kesh has been designing since the age of 12 and selling her tees by the truckload on her website for the past couple of years, but this show is our first peek at a full-blown collection, a coming-of-age style showcase of sorts. With rude-boy quilted sweatpants, lumber jack shorts in purply hues and giant appliqué apples outlined with equally giant stitching her debut collection has all the playful fizzy energy that we were hoping for (the big apple tees have Yeezy written all over them) while hitting the wearability button squarely on the nose. We only hope that next next time Kesh will throw in a few pieces in for the ladies too. In the meantime, we’re belting our XL sweatsuits.
